Itching after using a suppository?
Hello doctor, my menstrual period started on November 22.
Due to excessive discharge, I experienced intense itching in the vagina, so I inserted the remaining three suppositories of Lofenalac.
However, the itching and pain worsened, so I removed them and rinsed with clean water, which provided relief.
Does this count as an allergy? Thank you.

Dr. Lin Wenbin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
I have used it before, so it shouldn't be an allergy.
However, when there is severe vaginal inflammation, it may cause irritation.
Let's check it out at the clinic.

Vaginal irritation after the use of suppositories can be concerning, especially when accompanied by symptoms such as itching and pain. Based on your description, it seems that you experienced increased discomfort after using the remaining suppositories, which led you to remove them and wash the area with water for relief. This situation raises a few important points to consider regarding potential allergic reactions and other causes of vaginal irritation.
Firstly, it is essential to understand that vaginal irritation can stem from various factors, including allergic reactions, infections, or even irritation from the ingredients in the suppository itself. In your case, the increased itching and pain after using the suppository could suggest a few possibilities:
1. Allergic Reaction: It is possible that you may have developed an allergic reaction to one or more components of the suppository. Common symptoms of an allergic reaction can include itching, redness, swelling, and discomfort in the vaginal area. If you have a history of allergies to medications or topical products, this could be a contributing factor.
2. Chemical Irritation: Some vaginal suppositories contain ingredients that may cause irritation, especially if the vaginal mucosa is sensitive. Ingredients such as preservatives, fragrances, or other additives can lead to localized irritation. If you have sensitive skin or a history of reactions to similar products, this could explain your symptoms.
3. Infection: While your symptoms appeared after using the suppository, it is also important to consider the possibility of an underlying infection, such as a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis, which can cause similar symptoms. If the suppository was intended to treat an infection, it may not have been effective, leading to continued or worsening symptoms.
4. Physical Trauma: The act of inserting the suppository, especially if done with force or without adequate lubrication, can cause physical irritation or micro-tears in the vaginal tissue, leading to pain and discomfort.
Given these considerations, here are some recommendations for managing your symptoms and determining the underlying cause:
- Discontinue Use: If you suspect that the suppository is causing your symptoms, it is advisable to stop using it immediately. Monitor your symptoms to see if they improve after discontinuation.
- Consult a Healthcare Provider: It is essential to follow up with a healthcare provider, especially if your symptoms persist or worsen. They can perform a thorough examination, possibly including a pelvic exam, to rule out infections or other conditions. They may also recommend allergy testing if they suspect an allergic reaction.
- Symptomatic Relief: In the meantime, you can use mild, unscented moisturizers or lubricants to soothe the area. Avoid using harsh soaps or douches, as these can further irritate the vaginal mucosa.
- Keep a Symptom Diary: Documenting your symptoms, including when they occur and any products used, can help your healthcare provider identify potential triggers.
In conclusion, while it is possible that your symptoms are due to an allergic reaction to the suppository, other factors such as chemical irritation, infection, or physical trauma should also be considered. Consulting with a healthcare provider will provide you with the best course of action to alleviate your symptoms and address any underlying issues. Your health and comfort are paramount, so seeking professional advice is always a wise choice.
