Penile epidermitis!!
Hello! I would like to ask a question.
The lower part of my penis (the area in contact with the scrotum) has recently been experiencing itching for the past week, and there is a red reaction on the surface of the skin.
The surface of the scrotum also shows a red reaction and has an itching sensation as well! I have been using an ointment for treatment, and initially, when washing the area with soap, there was a slight pain.
The skin in that area cannot tolerate excessive friction! When well-ventilated, it is less prone to sweating, which also provides some relief! I have had sexual intercourse with my girlfriend, so I am unsure whether this is simply a fungal infection, eczema, or another skin condition! Please help clarify! Thank you!

Dr. Chen Zhihong reply Urology
Both eczema and fungal infections can cause skin itching and redness.
It is not possible to make a diagnosis based solely on verbal descriptions; visual examination is necessary for accurate assessment.
Therefore, both conditions are possible.

More Info
Penile dermatitis is a condition that can cause discomfort and irritation in the genital area, particularly on the penis and surrounding skin. It is characterized by symptoms such as redness, itching, and sometimes pain, which can be exacerbated by friction or moisture. Understanding the causes, symptoms, and treatment options for penile dermatitis is crucial for effective management and relief.
Causes of Penile Dermatitis
1. Irritation: This can occur due to friction from clothing, excessive sweating, or the use of harsh soaps and detergents. The skin in the genital area is sensitive, and any irritation can lead to dermatitis.
2. Infections: Fungal infections, particularly candidiasis (yeast infections), are common causes of penile dermatitis. Bacterial infections can also occur, especially if there is a break in the skin.
3. Allergic Reactions: Contact dermatitis can result from an allergic reaction to substances such as latex (from condoms), personal care products, or laundry detergents.
4. Skin Conditions: Conditions like eczema or psoriasis can also manifest in the genital area, leading to similar symptoms.
5. Poor Hygiene: Inadequate cleaning can lead to the buildup of sweat and bacteria, contributing to irritation and infection.
Symptoms of Penile Dermatitis
The symptoms you are experiencing, such as itching, redness, and pain during washing, are typical of penile dermatitis. The affected area may appear inflamed, and you may notice scaling or flaking of the skin. The discomfort can be aggravated by friction, moisture, or the use of irritating products.
Treatment Options
1. Topical Treatments: Over-the-counter hydrocortisone creams can help reduce inflammation and itching. Antifungal creams may be necessary if a yeast infection is suspected. It's essential to follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider or pharmacist.
2. Proper Hygiene: Maintaining good hygiene is crucial. Gently wash the area with mild soap and water, and ensure it is thoroughly dried afterward. Avoid using harsh soaps or products that may irritate the skin.
3. Avoid Irritants: Identify and avoid any potential irritants, such as scented soaps, lotions, or laundry detergents. If you suspect a latex allergy, consider using non-latex condoms.
4. Loose Clothing: Wearing loose-fitting underwear and clothing can help reduce friction and allow for better airflow, which can alleviate symptoms.
5. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If symptoms persist or worsen, it is essential to consult a healthcare provider. They can provide a proper diagnosis and may recommend prescription medications or further testing to rule out other conditions.
Conclusion
Penile dermatitis can be uncomfortable, but with proper care and treatment, symptoms can often be managed effectively. It's essential to pay attention to hygiene, avoid irritants, and seek medical advice when necessary. If you have been sexually active, it's also wise to discuss any concerns with your partner and consider getting tested for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) if you suspect an infection. Always consult a healthcare professional for personalized advice and treatment options tailored to your specific situation.
