The upper left eyelid has been swollen for over a month?
Hello, here’s the situation: About a month ago, I started experiencing redness and swelling in my left upper eyelid, along with itching and a lot of eye discharge.
I went to see an ophthalmologist and received eye drops.
Now, the redness, itching, and discharge have resolved, but the swelling is still very noticeable, causing my eyes to appear uneven.
I am still using the eye drops, but it seems there hasn't been much improvement.
Should I continue using the eye drops?

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology
Hello, Xin Hua Kai: If you are seeing an ophthalmologist, they should provide you with recommendations.
If you still have anisocoria (unequal pupil size), it may indicate ongoing inflammation or allergies.
You should continue to follow up with your ophthalmologist.
The Ophthalmology Department at Puzi Hospital in Taiwan is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM and Wednesday afternoons from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM.
We hope to have the opportunity to serve you.
Sincerely, Gao Pi-Lin.

More Info
Persistent swelling of the eyelid can be a frustrating and concerning issue, especially when it affects your appearance and comfort. Based on your description, it seems that you have already sought medical attention and received eye drops that have alleviated some symptoms, such as redness, itching, and discharge. However, the persistent swelling of your left upper eyelid remains a concern.
Understanding Eyelid Swelling
Eyelid swelling can result from various causes, including:
1. Allergic Reactions: Allergies to pollen, dust, pet dander, or even certain cosmetics can cause swelling.
2. Infections: Conditions such as conjunctivitis (pink eye) or blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelid) can lead to swelling.
3. Chalazion or Stye: A chalazion is a blocked oil gland in the eyelid, while a stye is an infection of an oil gland. Both can cause localized swelling.
4. Injury or Trauma: Any recent injury to the eye area can lead to swelling.
5. Systemic Conditions: Conditions like thyroid disease or kidney issues can also manifest as eyelid swelling.
Next Steps
Given that you have already been treated with eye drops and have seen some improvement in symptoms like redness and discharge, but the swelling persists, here are some recommendations:
1. Continue Using Eye Drops: If your doctor prescribed the eye drops, you should continue using them as directed unless advised otherwise. They may help reduce inflammation over time.
2. Follow-Up Appointment: Since the swelling has not resolved, it is essential to schedule a follow-up appointment with your eye care provider. They may need to reassess your condition and consider alternative treatments or further investigations.
3. Cold Compress: Applying a cold compress to the swollen eyelid can help reduce swelling and provide relief. Make sure to use a clean cloth and avoid direct contact with ice.
4. Avoid Allergens: If you suspect allergies, try to identify and avoid potential allergens. Over-the-counter antihistamines may also help alleviate allergic symptoms.
5. Monitor for Changes: Keep an eye on any changes in your symptoms. If you notice increased redness, pain, or changes in vision, seek medical attention promptly.
6. Consider Other Causes: If the swelling persists despite treatment, your doctor may consider other underlying causes, such as a chalazion or stye, which may require different treatments, including warm compresses or even minor surgical intervention.
7. Lifestyle Adjustments: Ensure you are getting enough rest, staying hydrated, and maintaining a balanced diet, as these factors can influence your overall health and potentially your eyelid condition.
Conclusion
Persistent eyelid swelling can be a sign of various underlying issues, and while some symptoms have improved, the ongoing swelling warrants further evaluation. Continue using your prescribed eye drops and make an appointment with your eye care provider for a thorough examination. They can provide a more accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan tailored to your specific situation. Remember, early intervention can often lead to better outcomes, so don’t hesitate to seek further medical advice.
