Can I get pregnant?

I started my period on November 27 and it ended on December 1.
My boyfriend and I had intercourse with ejaculation on December 25.
A few days later, I noticed some spotting.
My period was expected on December 27, but it was delayed by a week.
Recently, I've been feeling fatigued and occasionally have abdominal discomfort.
I do not plan on getting pregnant.
What is the likelihood of pregnancy?

Ke Ke, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/01/03

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, the irregularity of your menstrual cycle may mean that your ovulation period is not necessarily early or on time this month.
It is not possible to determine pregnancy solely based on subjective symptoms, so based on your description, there is a possibility of pregnancy.
I recommend that you take a urine test to check for pregnancy.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Chang.

More Info

Determining whether you are pregnant can be a complex process, especially when considering the timing of your menstrual cycle, sexual activity, and any symptoms you may be experiencing. Based on the information you've provided, let's break down the factors involved.

1. Timing of Your Menstrual Cycle: You mentioned that your last menstrual period started on November 27 and ended on December 1. If your cycle is regular and typically lasts around 28 days, you would expect your next period to start around December 25. Engaging in sexual intercourse on December 25, especially with ejaculation, does pose a risk for pregnancy, particularly if you were nearing ovulation, which typically occurs about 14 days after the start of your last period.

2. Symptoms: You noted experiencing some unusual symptoms, such as fatigue and occasional discomfort in your abdomen. These symptoms can be indicative of early pregnancy, but they can also be attributed to other factors, such as stress, hormonal changes, or even premenstrual symptoms. It's important to note that not all women experience the same symptoms during early pregnancy, and some may not experience any symptoms at all.

3. Delayed Menstrual Period: The fact that your period was delayed by a week is significant. A missed period is often one of the first signs of pregnancy. However, menstrual irregularities can occur for various reasons, including stress, changes in weight, or hormonal imbalances.

4. Pregnancy Testing: The most reliable way to determine if you are pregnant is to take a home pregnancy test. These tests work by detecting the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in your urine, which is produced shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. For the most accurate results, it is recommended to take the test after your missed period, as this allows enough time for hCG levels to rise.

5. Consulting a Healthcare Provider: If you are concerned about the possibility of being pregnant, or if you continue to experience symptoms that are unusual for you, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider. They can provide you with a blood test to confirm pregnancy and discuss your options moving forward, especially since you mentioned that you do not plan on becoming pregnant at this time.

6. Understanding Risks: If you are pregnant and not planning to continue the pregnancy, it is crucial to seek medical advice as soon as possible. There are various options available, and a healthcare provider can guide you through the process while ensuring your health and well-being.

In summary, based on the timing of your menstrual cycle, the sexual activity you described, and the symptoms you are experiencing, there is a possibility that you could be pregnant. Taking a home pregnancy test and consulting with a healthcare provider will provide you with the most accurate information and guidance. Remember, early intervention and support are essential, regardless of the outcome.
