Pregnancy Concerns

Hello, Dr.
Lu.
My menstrual cycle has generally been regular.
Before 2014, my average cycle was 25 days; from January to December 2015, my average cycle was 22 days.
However, after December 3, 2015, my expected period on December 25 did not occur.
During this time, I had sexual intercourse on December 11, December 16, December 23, and December 25.
On January 6, I used a pregnancy test and saw faint lines (a light pink line appeared near the test line T < C).
However, when I tested again on January 7, 8, and 9, it showed only one line.
My period was delayed by 17 days (it occurred on January 11).
Is it possible that I was pregnant earlier and then experienced a loss? If I want to conceive, should I seek medical assistance?

Xiao Xiao, 40~49 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/01/11

1.
If you are uncertain about being pregnant, in addition to using a home pregnancy test, you can also go to a hospital for a blood test.

2.
I encourage you to consult a specialist in infertility.
Best regards, Dr.
Lu Li-Cheng from Taoyuan Hospital.

Understanding irregular periods and early pregnancy signs can be quite complex, especially when there are fluctuations in menstrual cycles and the presence of pregnancy symptoms. Based on the information provided, it seems that you have experienced a significant change in your menstrual cycle, which can be influenced by various factors, including stress, hormonal changes, or underlying health conditions.

1. Irregular Menstrual Cycles: Your menstrual cycle has varied from an average of 25 days to 22 days, and now you have missed your period that was due on December 25. Irregular periods can sometimes indicate hormonal imbalances or other health issues. It's important to monitor your cycle and note any changes, as this can provide valuable information to your healthcare provider.

2. Early Pregnancy Signs: The faint lines you observed on the pregnancy test on January 6 could indicate a very early pregnancy. However, the subsequent tests showing only one line suggest that the pregnancy may not have been viable. A faint line can occur if the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is present in low levels, which can happen in early pregnancy or if there has been a chemical pregnancy, where the embryo does not develop properly.

3. Missed Period and Testing: Since your period was delayed by 17 days, it is reasonable to suspect that you may have been pregnant at some point. However, the fact that the test results changed from positive to negative suggests that the pregnancy may not have continued. Chemical pregnancies are relatively common and can occur even before a woman is aware she is pregnant.

4. Seeking Medical Assistance: If you are actively trying to conceive and have concerns about your menstrual irregularities or potential pregnancy loss, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider. They can perform blood tests to check your hCG levels and assess your overall reproductive health. Additionally, they may recommend further evaluations to understand the cause of your irregular cycles.

5. Future Pregnancy Considerations: If you wish to conceive, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, managing stress, and tracking your ovulation can be beneficial. Your healthcare provider may also suggest lifestyle changes or supplements that can support reproductive health.

6. Symptoms to Monitor: If you experience any unusual symptoms, such as severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, or persistent irregularities in your cycle, it is essential to seek medical attention promptly. These could indicate underlying issues that need to be addressed.

In summary, while the faint positive pregnancy test could suggest an early pregnancy, the subsequent negative results raise concerns about its viability. Given your irregular cycles and the desire to conceive, consulting with a healthcare provider would be a prudent step to ensure your reproductive health is optimized and to address any underlying issues that may be affecting your menstrual cycle.
