Dry and flaky?
Hello doctor, I would like to ask about something.
When the weather is cold, I notice that my glans becomes a bit dry and has some white flakes during an erection.
Is this normal, or is it unrelated to the weather? This only happens during an erection and resembles dry skin; at other times, there are no issues.
I consulted a doctor who mentioned a fungal infection and advised me to apply medication, but I still feel the same—no pain or itching, but it feels strange.
This has not happened before.
I usually shower with cold water and only occasionally use baby soap for cleaning.
What should I do? Thank you.

When it comes to the issue of dryness and flaking on the glans (the head of the penis), it is essential to understand the various factors that can contribute to this condition. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing dryness and a flaky texture on the glans, particularly during erections, and you have noted that this condition is not accompanied by pain or itching.
Firstly, it is important to recognize that the skin on the glans can be sensitive and may react to various environmental factors, including temperature changes. Cold weather can lead to dryness of the skin, which may explain the symptoms you are experiencing. When the body is exposed to cold, blood flow to the skin can decrease, leading to dryness and flaking. This is similar to how skin on other parts of the body can become dry and flaky in colder climates.
You mentioned that a doctor previously diagnosed you with a fungal infection and prescribed medication. Fungal infections can indeed cause changes in the skin's appearance, including dryness and flaking. However, if you have completed the treatment and still notice these symptoms, it may be worth considering other potential causes.
One possibility is that the dryness could be related to hygiene practices. While you mentioned using cold water and occasionally a mild soap for cleaning, it is crucial to ensure that the area is cleaned properly without over-drying the skin. Using very hot water or harsh soaps can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness. It might be beneficial to switch to a gentle, moisturizing soap and to avoid using soap on the glans itself, as this area is sensitive and often does not require soap for cleaning.
Another factor to consider is the use of lubricants or moisturizers. If you are experiencing dryness during erections, using a water-based lubricant during sexual activity may help alleviate discomfort and improve the overall experience. Additionally, applying a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to the area when not engaged in sexual activity may help to restore moisture to the skin.
If the dryness and flaking persist despite these adjustments, it is advisable to follow up with a healthcare provider. They may want to conduct further examinations to rule out other conditions, such as dermatitis or other skin disorders that could be contributing to your symptoms.
In summary, while some dryness and flaking on the glans can be normal, especially in response to environmental factors like cold weather, it is essential to monitor the symptoms. If they continue or worsen, seeking further medical advice is recommended. Maintaining proper hygiene, using gentle products, and considering the use of moisturizers can help manage the condition effectively. Always consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice and treatment options tailored to your specific situation.
