Glans issues
Hello, doctor.
Recently, I noticed that a part of the glans is smoother than the rest, and there are some flakes on it, similar to dry skin flakes.
This has been happening for a while, and I'm not sure if I need to be concerned about anything.
(I have had a circumcision.)

It is likely an inflammation.
Be sure to maintain cleanliness and hygiene.
If symptoms persist, consider visiting an outpatient clinic for medical attention.

Hello! Thank you for your question regarding the dryness and flaking concerns on the glans (the head of the penis). It's important to address these symptoms, as they can be indicative of various conditions.
First, let's discuss what you might be experiencing. The glans is typically smooth and moist, and any changes in texture or the presence of flaking skin can be concerning. The symptoms you describe—dryness and flaking—could be due to several factors.
1. Irritation or Allergic Reaction: Sometimes, the use of soaps, lotions, or other personal care products can cause irritation or an allergic reaction, leading to dryness and flaking. If you've recently changed any products, consider reverting to your previous ones to see if the symptoms improve.
2. Dermatitis: This is a general term for inflammation of the skin. Contact dermatitis, which occurs when the skin comes into contact with an irritant or allergen, can lead to dryness and flaking. Seborrheic dermatitis, a more chronic condition, can also affect the genital area, causing similar symptoms.
3. Fungal Infections: Yeast infections, particularly caused by Candida, can lead to dryness, flaking, and sometimes itching. This is more common in individuals who are uncircumcised, but it can occur in those who are circumcised as well.
4. Psoriasis: This is a chronic autoimmune condition that can affect various parts of the body, including the genital area. It can cause red patches covered with thick, silvery scales, which may flake off.
5. Lichen Sclerosus: This is a less common condition that can cause white patches on the skin, including the glans. It can lead to thinning of the skin and may cause discomfort.
6. Other Skin Conditions: There are other dermatological conditions that can affect the genital area, leading to dryness and flaking.
Given that you mentioned you have been circumcised, this may reduce the likelihood of certain conditions, such as phimosis or balanitis, which are more common in uncircumcised individuals. However, dryness and flaking can still occur post-circumcision.
Recommendations:
1. Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that a product may be causing irritation, stop using it and see if your symptoms improve.
2. Moisturize: Applying a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer can help alleviate dryness. Look for products specifically designed for sensitive skin.
3. Maintain Hygiene: Ensure that you are keeping the area clean and dry. Avoid excessive scrubbing, which can further irritate the skin.
4. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If the dryness and flaking persist, worsen, or are accompanied by other symptoms (such as itching, redness, or discharge), it is important to consult a healthcare provider. They can perform a physical examination and may recommend treatments such as topical steroids, antifungal creams, or other medications depending on the diagnosis.
5. Avoid Self-Diagnosis: While it’s helpful to research your symptoms, self-diagnosing can lead to unnecessary worry or inappropriate treatment. A healthcare professional can provide a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
In summary, while dryness and flaking of the glans can be concerning, there are several potential causes, and many can be effectively managed with the right approach. If you have any further questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional for personalized advice.
