Similar to edema?
Hello, for the past two days, my calves have been unusually swollen and painful when pressed.
This occurs after dinner and after taking a shower before going to bed, but in the morning, everything seems fine.
What could be the cause of this?

1.
There are many causes of lower extremity edema; common ones include poor venous return, heart failure, cirrhosis, impaired kidney function, excessive salt intake, certain medications, and pregnancy, among others.
Rare causes may include tumors, lymphatic obstruction, and parasitic infections.
Given your young age and the absence of other discomforts, it is most likely due to poor venous return, which could be a result of prolonged standing, sitting, or walking.
Additionally, excessive salt intake in your diet can exacerbate the severity of the edema.
Generally, avoiding prolonged sitting or standing and elevating your legs while watching television can help improve the condition.
2.
However, your edema may also be caused by other factors.
Therefore, it is essential to discuss this matter in person with your family physician.

Leg swelling, particularly when it occurs in the evening after activities such as eating and bathing, can be attributed to several potential causes. Understanding these causes is crucial for determining whether medical intervention is necessary.
One common reason for leg swelling is fluid retention, also known as edema. This can happen due to various factors, including dietary choices, such as high salt intake, which can lead to the body retaining more water. Additionally, prolonged periods of sitting or standing can cause blood to pool in the legs, especially after a long day of activity. This is often exacerbated by heat, which can cause blood vessels to dilate and lead to increased fluid leakage into surrounding tissues.
Another potential cause of leg swelling is venous insufficiency. This condition occurs when the veins in the legs are unable to effectively return blood to the heart, leading to pooling of blood and subsequent swelling. Symptoms may include a feeling of heaviness in the legs, varicose veins, and skin changes.
In some cases, leg swelling can be a sign of more serious conditions, such as heart failure, kidney disease, or liver problems. These conditions can disrupt the body's fluid balance and lead to significant swelling. If the swelling is accompanied by other symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, or significant pain in the leg, it is essential to seek medical attention promptly.
In your case, since the swelling occurs primarily in the evenings and resolves by morning, it may be related to daily activities or dietary factors. However, the presence of pain is concerning and warrants further evaluation. Pain in conjunction with swelling can indicate inflammation or injury, and it could also suggest a more serious condition such as a deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which is a blood clot in the leg that can be life-threatening if it travels to the lungs.
When to Seek Help:
1. Persistent Swelling: If the swelling does not resolve overnight or continues to worsen.
2. Pain: If the pain becomes severe or is accompanied by redness, warmth, or tenderness in the leg.
3. Shortness of Breath: If you experience difficulty breathing, chest pain, or a rapid heartbeat.
4. Skin Changes: If you notice any changes in skin color, temperature, or texture.
In summary, while occasional leg swelling can be benign and related to lifestyle factors, the presence of pain and the pattern of swelling you describe should not be ignored. It is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation to rule out any serious underlying conditions and to receive appropriate management. Keeping a record of your symptoms, including when they occur and any associated factors, can be helpful for your healthcare provider in making a diagnosis.
