Taking Terbinafine while also taking B vitamins?

Hello doctor, I have had onychomycosis for 10 years.
Recently, I have been taking Terbinafine tablets for 9 weeks.
However, due to heavy work, I am feeling a bit fatigued.
I would like to ask if it is safe to take B vitamins while on Terbinafine?

When dealing with nail fungus, particularly onychomycosis, Lamisil (terbinafine) is a commonly prescribed antifungal medication. It works by inhibiting the growth of fungi, effectively treating the infection. Given your situation of having been on Lamisil for nine weeks, it’s understandable that you’re concerned about your overall health, especially with the added fatigue from work.

To address your question about taking B vitamins while on Lamisil, the short answer is yes, you can generally take B vitamins while using Lamisil. There are no known significant interactions between Lamisil and B vitamins. In fact, B vitamins play a crucial role in energy metabolism and can help alleviate some fatigue, which is beneficial when you're feeling run down.

B vitamins, such as B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6 (pyridoxine), B7 (biotin), B9 (folate), and B12 (cobalamin), are essential for various bodily functions, including energy production, red blood cell formation, and maintaining a healthy nervous system. They can also support skin health, which is particularly relevant when dealing with fungal infections.

However, while B vitamins are generally safe, it’s always wise to consult with your healthcare provider before adding any new supplements to your regimen. This is particularly important if you have any underlying health conditions or are taking other medications. Your doctor can provide personalized advice based on your health history and current treatment plan.

In addition to considering B vitamins, it’s also important to monitor your liver function while on Lamisil, as the medication can have hepatotoxic effects, especially with prolonged use. Regular blood tests to check liver enzymes are recommended, particularly if you have any risk factors for liver disease or if you experience symptoms such as jaundice, dark urine, or persistent abdominal pain.

Moreover, maintaining a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals can support your overall health and immune function, which is crucial when fighting off infections. Foods rich in B vitamins include whole grains, meat, eggs, dairy products, legumes, seeds, nuts, and leafy green vegetables.

In summary, you can take B vitamins while using Lamisil for nail fungus, but it’s best to consult with your healthcare provider for tailored advice. They can help ensure that your treatment for nail fungus is effective while also addressing your fatigue and overall health. Remember to keep up with your follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and any potential side effects from the antifungal treatment.
