Chronic prostatitis

Previously, during a check-up, the doctor mentioned that I have prostatitis, and the ultrasound showed that my prostate is approximately three times larger than normal (30 grams), with residual urine of about 40 ml.
The doctor prescribed me Ocas (0.4 mg) but advised me to take half of it.
I went online and found that this medication should not be split, and I'm not sure if I misheard.
I would like to ask if I should continue taking it, or should I switch to taking it every other day instead of the usual once every night before bed? Thank you.

Dr. Li Xinyi reply Urology

According to the doctor's instructions, it should be taken half at a time.
It is not recommended to take it every other day.

Managing chronic prostatitis can be a complex issue, especially when it comes to medication dosage and treatment options. Based on your description, it seems you have been diagnosed with prostatitis and have been prescribed Ocas (which contains tamsulosin, a medication commonly used to treat urinary symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia).
First, let's address your concern about the dosage. Tamsulosin is typically prescribed in a dosage of 0.4 mg once daily, and it is important to take it as directed by your physician. If your doctor advised you to take half of the tablet, it is crucial to clarify this with them directly, as splitting tamsulosin capsules can affect the release mechanism of the medication. Tamsulosin is designed to be taken whole, and splitting it may lead to inconsistent dosing, which could potentially reduce its effectiveness in managing your symptoms.

If you are unsure whether you should continue taking the medication daily or switch to every other day, it is best to consult your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific condition and response to treatment. It is essential to maintain open communication with your doctor, especially when it comes to medication adjustments, as they can monitor your symptoms and any potential side effects.

In terms of managing chronic prostatitis, there are several treatment options available. Besides tamsulosin, other medications may include antibiotics if there is a bacterial infection present, anti-inflammatory drugs, and alpha-blockers, which help relax the muscles around the prostate and bladder neck, improving urine flow. Additionally, lifestyle modifications such as dietary changes, pelvic floor exercises, and stress management techniques can also play a significant role in alleviating symptoms.

It's also worth noting that chronic prostatitis can sometimes be resistant to treatment, and it may require a multi-faceted approach. If you find that your symptoms persist despite medication, it may be beneficial to explore other treatment options with your healthcare provider, such as physical therapy, biofeedback, or even alternative therapies.

Lastly, regular follow-up appointments with your urologist are crucial to monitor your condition and adjust treatment as necessary. They can perform tests to assess the size of your prostate, evaluate any residual urine, and determine if further interventions are needed.

In summary, continue taking your medication as prescribed, but clarify any uncertainties with your doctor. Managing chronic prostatitis often requires a comprehensive approach, so stay engaged with your healthcare provider to find the best treatment plan for your situation.
