Fistula surgery
Hello, doctor.
I recently had surgery for an anal fistula, and today is the 27th day since the procedure.
The external wound is almost healed.
Occasionally, I experience itching inside the anus, and after sitting for a long time, I feel slight throbbing pain.
When my stool is hard, there is a little bit of dried blood on the toilet paper, but there is no blood when the stool is soft.
I have not experienced any pus discharge recently.
Is this normal, and what could be the cause?

After undergoing anal fistula surgery, it is common to experience a range of symptoms as part of the healing process. Given that you are currently 27 days post-operation, it is encouraging to hear that your external wound is nearly healed and that you are no longer experiencing pus discharge. However, the symptoms you are describing, such as occasional itching, mild pain during prolonged sitting, and slight bleeding when passing hard stools, are not uncommon and can be attributed to several factors related to the surgical site and the healing process.
Firstly, itching around the anal area can occur as the skin heals. This sensation is often a sign of the healing process, as new tissue forms and nerve endings become more active. However, if the itching becomes severe or is accompanied by other symptoms such as increased redness or swelling, it may be worth discussing with your healthcare provider.
The mild pain you experience when sitting for extended periods is also a common post-operative symptom. After anal surgery, the area can be sensitive, and prolonged pressure can lead to discomfort. It is advisable to take breaks and change positions frequently to alleviate this discomfort. Using a cushion or a specialized seat can also help reduce pressure on the surgical site.
Regarding the bleeding you mentioned, it is not unusual to see a small amount of blood on toilet paper, especially if you are experiencing hard stools. Straining during bowel movements can irritate the surgical site and lead to minor bleeding. To mitigate this, it is essential to maintain a soft stool consistency. This can be achieved by increasing your dietary fiber intake, drinking plenty of fluids, and possibly using stool softeners if recommended by your doctor.
It is also important to monitor your bowel habits. If you notice any significant changes, such as increased bleeding, severe pain, or signs of infection (such as fever or increased swelling), you should contact your healthcare provider promptly. They may recommend follow-up care or adjustments to your post-operative management plan.
In summary, while some discomfort and minor bleeding can be expected during the recovery phase after anal fistula surgery, it is crucial to remain vigilant about your symptoms. Ensuring a soft stool consistency, practicing good hygiene, and avoiding prolonged sitting can help facilitate your recovery. If you have any concerns or if your symptoms worsen, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance. Your recovery is a process, and open communication with your medical team is key to ensuring a smooth healing journey.
