Delayed menstruation?
Hello Doctor: My last menstrual period was on January 31.
I had sexual intercourse on February 10 and February 13, but my period has not yet arrived, which is about 5 days late.
I used a pregnancy test, but it only showed one line.
What are the chances of being pregnant? Thank you for your response.

Hello, you should not be pregnant; just monitor the situation.
If your period does not arrive after another week, it is generally recommended to see a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

Delayed menstruation can be a source of anxiety, especially when considering the possibility of pregnancy. In your case, since your last menstrual period started on January 31 and you had sexual intercourse on February 10 and 13, it is understandable that you are concerned about whether you might be pregnant, especially since your period is now five days late.
First, let's discuss the likelihood of pregnancy. The timing of your sexual activity is crucial. If you have a regular menstrual cycle, ovulation typically occurs about 14 days before your next period. For a cycle that averages around 28 days, ovulation would likely occur around day 14, which in your case would be around February 14. Since you had intercourse on February 10 and 13, this timing could potentially align with your fertile window, which is generally considered to be the days leading up to and including ovulation.
However, the fact that you have tested for pregnancy and received a negative result (one line on the pregnancy test) suggests that you are not pregnant, especially if the test was taken after your missed period. Home pregnancy tests are generally quite accurate when used correctly, particularly after a missed period. If you are still concerned, it may be worthwhile to wait a few more days and test again, or consult with your healthcare provider for a blood test, which can provide more definitive results.
Now, regarding the delay in your menstruation, there are several factors that can contribute to a late period aside from pregnancy. Stress, changes in weight, hormonal imbalances, and medical conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can all affect your menstrual cycle. If you have been experiencing significant stress or changes in your lifestyle, these could be contributing factors to your delayed menstruation.
If your period does not arrive within the next week, or if you continue to experience irregular cycles, it would be advisable to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination, blood tests to check hormone levels, and possibly an ultrasound to assess your reproductive health.
In summary, while the timing of your sexual activity suggests a possibility of pregnancy, the negative pregnancy test indicates that you are likely not pregnant. Delayed menstruation can be caused by various factors, and if this becomes a recurring issue, seeking medical advice would be beneficial. Remember to monitor your body and any other symptoms you may experience, as this information can be helpful for your healthcare provider in determining the best course of action.
