Breast enlargement accompanied by pain?

Recently, my breasts have noticeably enlarged, but it's not around my menstrual period, and they have never gotten this big before.
They feel firmer than before and are also painful.
Aside from the enlargement and pain, there are no other symptoms.
Is this normal?

Li Yu, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/03/07

Dr. Zhou Jiazhen reply Breast and Thyroid

Dear Liyu: Sometimes changes in breast tissue can be caused by hormonal imbalances within the body.
If there are fluctuations in hormones (which can be influenced by factors such as diet, lifestyle, and environment), the breasts may undergo changes.
As long as there are no lumps, it is usually sufficient to monitor the situation.
However, if you have concerns, a consultation with a healthcare provider is recommended.

More Info

Breast enlargement and pain can be concerning symptoms for many individuals, and it's important to understand the potential causes and when to seek medical advice. Based on the information provided, it seems that you are experiencing noticeable changes in your breast size and tenderness, which are not typical for your menstrual cycle. While breast pain (mastalgia) and enlargement can occur for various reasons, it is essential to consider several factors.

Firstly, hormonal fluctuations are a common cause of breast changes. The menstrual cycle typically involves hormonal shifts that can lead to breast swelling and tenderness, particularly in the luteal phase (the time between ovulation and the start of menstruation). However, if you are experiencing significant enlargement and pain outside of your usual cycle, it may indicate an underlying issue that warrants further investigation.

Other potential causes of breast enlargement and pain include:
1. Hormonal Imbalances: Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid disorders can lead to hormonal imbalances that may cause breast changes.

2. Fibrocystic Breast Changes: Many women experience fibrocystic changes in their breasts, which can lead to lumpiness, tenderness, and swelling. This condition is generally benign but can be uncomfortable.

3. Pregnancy: If there is a possibility of pregnancy, breast enlargement and tenderness can be early signs. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can lead to significant breast changes.

4. Breast Cysts or Fibroadenomas: These are benign lumps that can develop in the breast tissue. They can cause discomfort and changes in breast size.

5. Medications: Certain medications, particularly hormonal therapies or contraceptives, can lead to breast enlargement and tenderness as a side effect.

6. Infections or Inflammation: Conditions such as mastitis (an infection of the breast tissue) can cause localized pain and swelling.

Given your symptoms, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional, particularly a breast specialist or gynecologist, who can perform a thorough evaluation. This may include a physical examination, imaging studies such as a mammogram or ultrasound, and possibly blood tests to assess hormone levels.

In the meantime, here are some self-care measures you can consider to alleviate discomfort:
- Wear a supportive bra: A well-fitted bra can provide support and reduce discomfort.

- Apply warm or cold compresses: Depending on what feels better for you, applying a warm or cold compress can help relieve pain.

- Over-the-counter pain relief: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen can help manage pain and inflammation.

It is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If you notice any additional changes, such as unusual discharge from the nipples, persistent pain, or new lumps, seek medical attention promptly. Early evaluation and diagnosis are crucial in addressing any potential issues effectively.

In conclusion, while breast enlargement and pain can be normal due to hormonal changes, significant or persistent symptoms should not be ignored. A healthcare provider can help determine the underlying cause and recommend appropriate treatment or management strategies.
