Menstrual status
Hello doctor, my girlfriend has brown discharge in small amounts in the morning when her period starts, which turns into dark red and increases in volume by the evening.
The next morning, there is very little on her pad, and only after showering does a small amount of dark red discharge come out.
(She was four days late.) I would like to know why this is happening and what could be the cause.

Hello, please observe in the next few days to see if it resembles menstruation.
If it does not, it is advisable to consult a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

Understanding abnormal menstrual discharge can be quite complex, as it involves various physiological and pathological factors. In the case you described, your girlfriend is experiencing a change in the color and consistency of her menstrual discharge, which can be influenced by several factors.
Firstly, the presence of brown or dark red discharge is often associated with older blood that has taken longer to exit the uterus. This can occur at the beginning or end of a menstrual period, where the flow is lighter, and the blood has had time to oxidize, leading to a darker color. It is not uncommon for women to experience variations in their menstrual flow, including changes in color, consistency, and volume from cycle to cycle.
The delayed onset of her period by four days could also be a contributing factor. Menstrual cycles can be affected by numerous elements, including stress, hormonal fluctuations, changes in weight, exercise levels, and even illness. If your girlfriend has experienced any significant changes in her lifestyle or emotional state recently, this could potentially explain the delay and the subsequent changes in her menstrual discharge.
Another important consideration is the possibility of underlying health conditions. Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, or uterine fibroids can lead to irregular menstrual cycles and abnormal discharge. Infections, such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or sexually transmitted infections (STIs), can also cause changes in discharge and should be ruled out, especially if accompanied by other symptoms like pain, fever, or unusual odor.
If the discharge is accompanied by any concerning symptoms, such as severe abdominal pain, fever, or an unusual odor, it would be advisable for her to consult a healthcare provider. A thorough evaluation, including a pelvic exam and possibly imaging studies or laboratory tests, may be necessary to rule out any serious conditions.
In summary, while the changes in your girlfriend's menstrual discharge could be due to normal physiological variations, they could also indicate underlying health issues. It is essential to monitor her symptoms and seek medical advice if there are any concerns or if the changes persist in future cycles. Regular gynecological check-ups are also recommended to maintain reproductive health and address any potential issues early on.
