Desquamation?
Hello Doctor, I would like to ask about the situation regarding dryness and flaking of the glans.
It is more noticeable during erections, but there is no pain or itching.
I have followed your advice to apply baby oil after showering, but every morning after an erection when I need to urinate, I still notice some flakes on the glans.
I also consulted Dr.
Hsien online, and he mentioned that it could be due to dry weather.
He suggested that if I feel it is not moisturizing enough, I could switch to petroleum jelly.
I would like to ask you:
1.
Since petroleum jelly is a gel, should I keep the foreskin retracted after applying it?
2.
This issue has been bothering me since December of last year.
If using petroleum jelly does not help, should I see a urologist?
3.
Besides applying it after showering, can I also apply petroleum jelly in the morning?
4.
If this is due to dry weather, does that mean I will experience this condition every winter? I have not had this issue before, so I have more questions.
Thank you for your answers, Doctor.

It is recommended to clean thoroughly after sexual activity.
If there are any wounds, apply medication to prevent irritation.
It is advised to avoid wearing tight clothing and to wash only with clean water.
Do not let the glans come into contact with any chemical substances.
Try using a hairdryer to dry off after bathing for a period of time, and apply medication afterward.
Make sure to dry off after urination.

More Info
Understanding dryness and flaking of the glans can be a common concern, especially in colder and drier climates. The symptoms you describe—dryness and flaking of the glans, particularly noticeable during an erection—can be attributed to several factors, including environmental conditions, skin sensitivity, and hygiene practices.
Causes of Dryness and Flaking
1. Environmental Factors: As you mentioned, the cold and dry weather can significantly contribute to skin dryness. Low humidity levels can lead to moisture loss from the skin, making it more prone to flaking and irritation.
2. Hygiene Products: The use of soaps, body washes, or other hygiene products that contain harsh chemicals can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness. It's essential to use gentle, fragrance-free products, especially in sensitive areas.
3. Skin Conditions: Conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, or contact dermatitis can also cause dryness and flaking. If the symptoms persist or worsen, it may be worth consulting a dermatologist to rule out any underlying skin conditions.
4. Friction and Irritation: Activities that involve friction, such as sexual activity or vigorous washing, can irritate the skin and contribute to dryness.
Solutions and Recommendations
1. Moisturizing: Applying a suitable moisturizer is crucial. While baby oil can provide some moisture, switching to a thicker occlusive agent like petroleum jelly (Vaseline) can be more effective in sealing in moisture. After applying, it is generally recommended to keep the area covered to maintain hydration, but you should ensure that it does not cause discomfort or irritation.
2. Application Timing: You can apply petroleum jelly after bathing and also in the morning if you notice dryness. It’s essential to apply it to clean skin to avoid trapping bacteria or irritants.
3. Consulting a Specialist: If using petroleum jelly does not alleviate the symptoms after a reasonable period (usually a few weeks), it would be wise to consult a urologist or dermatologist. They can provide a more tailored treatment plan and check for any underlying conditions that may require specific interventions.
4. Seasonal Considerations: If dryness is primarily an issue during winter, it may be a seasonal problem. However, if you notice that the symptoms persist even in more humid conditions, it could indicate a need for further evaluation.
5. Hygiene Practices: Ensure that you are practicing good hygiene without over-washing the area. Gentle cleansing with warm water and avoiding harsh soaps can help maintain the natural moisture barrier of the skin.
Conclusion
In summary, dryness and flaking of the glans can be influenced by environmental factors, hygiene practices, and potential skin conditions. Using a suitable moisturizer like petroleum jelly can help, and if symptoms persist, seeking medical advice is recommended. It’s essential to listen to your body and adjust your skincare routine accordingly, especially during seasonal changes. If you have any further questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out for professional guidance.
