Is there inflammation of the glans?
Hello, a few days ago I noticed small white spots appearing under my glans, and I experience sharp pain during erections.
Could this be a case of balanoposthitis? How should I treat it? I just started retracting my foreskin to clean it a few days ago.
Will it heal on its own?

More Info
Understanding glans inflammation, also known as balanitis, is crucial for addressing the symptoms and determining the appropriate treatment. Balanitis refers to the inflammation of the glans (the head of the penis) and can be caused by various factors, including infections, irritants, and underlying health conditions.
Symptoms
The symptoms of balanitis can vary, but common signs include:
- Redness and swelling of the glans
- Itching or irritation
- Pain or discomfort, especially during erection or sexual activity
- A discharge that may be thick or have an unpleasant odor
- White spots or lesions on the glans, which you mentioned in your case
Causes
Several factors can contribute to the development of balanitis:
1. Infections: Bacterial, fungal (such as Candida), or viral infections can lead to inflammation. Yeast infections are particularly common in uncircumcised males.
2. Poor Hygiene: Inadequate cleaning under the foreskin can lead to the accumulation of smegma, a substance that can irritate the glans and cause inflammation.
3. Irritants: Soaps, lotions, or other personal care products can irritate sensitive skin. Allergic reactions to these products can also cause balanitis.
4. Skin Conditions: Conditions like psoriasis or eczema can affect the genital area, leading to inflammation.
5. Underlying Health Issues: Diabetes can increase the risk of infections, including balanitis, due to higher sugar levels in bodily fluids.
Treatment
The treatment for balanitis depends on the underlying cause:
- Good Hygiene: Regularly cleaning the area with mild soap and water can help prevent and treat balanitis. It’s essential to gently retract the foreskin (if applicable) and clean underneath it.
- Topical Treatments: If the inflammation is due to a fungal or bacterial infection, your doctor may prescribe antifungal or antibiotic creams. Over-the-counter antifungal creams may also be effective for mild cases.
- Avoid Irritants: Discontinue the use of any products that may be causing irritation. Opt for hypoallergenic soaps and avoid scented products.
- Medical Evaluation: If symptoms persist or worsen, it’s essential to consult a healthcare provider. They may perform tests to identify the specific cause of the inflammation and recommend appropriate treatment.
Self-Healing
In some cases, mild balanitis may resolve on its own with improved hygiene practices. However, if you are experiencing pain during erections or if the white spots do not improve, it is advisable to seek medical attention. Self-diagnosing can lead to complications, especially if an infection is present.
Conclusion
In summary, while it is possible for mild cases of balanitis to self-resolve, persistent symptoms warrant a visit to a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. Maintaining good hygiene and avoiding irritants are key preventive measures. If you suspect an infection or if the condition does not improve, do not hesitate to seek medical advice. Early intervention can help prevent complications and ensure a quicker recovery.
