Pain when touching the left nipple?

Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask about some pain I’ve been experiencing in my left nipple when I touch it.
It doesn’t look abnormal, and my breast feels fine overall.
I previously breastfed for a year but stopped over a year ago.
Should I get this checked out? Thank you.

Grufala, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/08/24

Dr. Wu Jianting reply Breast and Thyroid

During self-examination, please pay attention to whether you feel any lumps, if there is any discharge from the nipples, and if there are any skin changes resembling eczema.
Pain is not necessarily related to tumor growth; it can be associated with the menstrual cycle.
If you still have concerns, please consult a hospital.
Thank you for your question.

Experiencing pain in the left nipple can be concerning, especially if it occurs with sensitivity to touch. While it may not always indicate a serious underlying condition, it is essential to consider various factors that could contribute to this symptom. Given your history of breastfeeding for a year and having stopped over a year ago, there are several potential explanations for your current discomfort.

First, nipple pain can arise from several benign causes, including hormonal changes, irritation, or even physical trauma. Hormonal fluctuations, particularly those associated with the menstrual cycle, can lead to breast tenderness and sensitivity, including in the nipple area. Additionally, if there has been any recent change in your bra or clothing that may cause friction, this could also lead to localized pain.

Another possibility is that the pain could be related to residual effects from breastfeeding. After weaning, some women may experience changes in breast tissue or lingering sensitivity in the nipple area. Conditions such as ductal ectasia, where a milk duct beneath the nipple dilates, fills with fluid, and thickens, can also occur, leading to discomfort.

However, it is crucial to be vigilant about any accompanying symptoms. If you notice any unusual discharge from the nipple, changes in the appearance of the nipple or breast, or if the pain persists or worsens, it would be prudent to seek medical attention. These could be signs of conditions that require further evaluation, such as infections, cysts, or, in rare cases, breast cancer.

In your case, since the pain is localized to the nipple and does not seem to be associated with any other symptoms, it may not be an immediate cause for alarm. However, it is always better to err on the side of caution. Consulting with a healthcare provider, such as a gynecologist or a breast specialist, can provide you with a thorough evaluation. They may recommend a physical examination and, if necessary, imaging studies like a mammogram or ultrasound to rule out any underlying issues.

In summary, while nipple pain can often be benign, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If the pain persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other concerning signs, seeking medical advice is advisable. Early evaluation can help ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly, providing peace of mind and appropriate care.
