Penile issues
Hello Doctor: In the past few days, I noticed one or two white spots under my penis while showering.
When I shone a flashlight on them and looked closely, I found that the white spots had fine hairs on top.
Are these hairs normal or could they be warts? I have a lot of hair in that area and have used a razor to shave it.
Some of the spots disappear after a couple of days.
Additionally, I have small white bumps on my testicles that are not painful or itchy, but when I squeeze them, a white substance comes out.
Also, could you please tell me how accurate HIV test kits are?
Ke, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/11/12
Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology
Hello: The changes in the skin are mostly seen in young people.
If they increase in size or number, please seek medical attention.
Additionally, for HIV testing, please go to a healthcare facility.
Antibodies can take 6-12 weeks to be detectable after engaging in high-risk behavior.
It is advisable to avoid high-risk behaviors.
Thank you for your inquiry.

When it comes to concerns regarding white bumps on the penis and associated health issues, it's essential to approach the situation with a clear understanding of potential causes and the importance of seeking medical advice.
Firstly, the white bumps you are observing could be a variety of things. One common possibility is pearly penile papules, which are small, harmless bumps that typically appear around the corona of the glans (the head of the penis). These are completely normal anatomical variations and do not require treatment. Another possibility could be sebaceous cysts, which are small lumps filled with sebum (oil) that can occur anywhere on the skin, including the genital area. These cysts are generally benign and may not cause any discomfort.
However, if the bumps are accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, itching, or discharge, it could indicate a more serious condition, such as a sexually transmitted infection (STI) or a dermatological issue. For instance, genital warts, caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), can appear as small, flesh-colored or white bumps and may require medical evaluation and treatment.
Regarding the white granular appearance on your testicles, this could also be sebaceous cysts or possibly Fordyce spots, which are small, painless, pale bumps that are actually enlarged sebaceous glands. Like pearly penile papules, these are normal and not a cause for concern. However, if you notice any changes in size, color, or if they become painful, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider.
As for the discharge you mentioned when squeezing the bumps, this could indicate a blocked gland or cyst, which may require further evaluation. It is crucial to avoid squeezing or attempting to pop these bumps, as this can lead to infection or inflammation.
Regarding your question about the accuracy of HIV test kits, it is important to note that home testing kits can vary in their sensitivity and specificity. Generally, FDA-approved HIV test kits are reliable and can provide accurate results when used correctly. However, it is recommended to follow up with a healthcare provider for confirmatory testing, especially if you have concerns about potential exposure to HIV.
In summary, while the white bumps and granular formations you are experiencing may be benign, it is always best to consult with a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management. They can provide you with peace of mind and ensure that any necessary treatment is initiated. Regular check-ups and open discussions about sexual health are vital for maintaining overall well-being.
