Muscle pain, swelling, and numbness?
Help: When I lie flat on my back, I need to turn my lower body to the left side to feel comfortable.
During sleep, I constantly have to change positions; otherwise, my body becomes numb, stiff, and painful, waking me up, and I struggle to change my sleeping position smoothly.
Due to my work, standing, sitting, or getting up feels like it takes me 3-5 minutes to return to normal, similar to an elderly person.
I have seen numerous specialists and taken many painkillers and muscle relaxants.
This recurring issue has prevented me from sleeping peacefully for over ten years.
Recently, my entire right hand has also been swollen, painful, numb, and tingling, especially in the arm.
At night, I feel like a zombie, unable to get up.
Doctors have been unable to find the cause.
What should I do? I feel helpless! I feel helpless! I haven't seen a rehabilitation specialist yet.
Should I go once? Help!

Hello: Based on your symptoms, it is important to clarify whether there is any compression of the spine and nerves.
We need to identify the cause of the pain to determine if rehabilitation, medication, or surgical treatment is necessary.
Joint degeneration and muscle changes can lead to stiffness, pain, and numbness, which are often related to compression or poor blood circulation.
A comprehensive evaluation is needed to understand the situation.
Thank you!

More Info
It sounds like you are experiencing a complex and distressing set of symptoms that have significantly impacted your quality of life, particularly your sleep. Chronic muscle pain, numbness, and difficulty finding a comfortable sleeping position can be indicative of several underlying issues, and it’s understandable that you feel overwhelmed and frustrated by the lack of clear answers from your healthcare providers.
Based on your description, it seems you may be dealing with a combination of musculoskeletal issues, possibly related to myofascial pain syndrome or fibromyalgia, as well as potential nerve involvement. The symptoms of pain, numbness, and the need to frequently change positions during sleep suggest that there may be underlying muscle tension or nerve compression contributing to your discomfort.
1. Understanding Your Symptoms:
Chronic muscle pain can arise from various sources, including muscle strain, overuse, or underlying conditions such as fibromyalgia, which is characterized by widespread pain and tenderness. Numbness and tingling sensations, particularly in the arms and legs, may indicate nerve compression or irritation, possibly due to poor posture, repetitive movements, or even conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome.
2. The Importance of a Comprehensive Evaluation:
Since you have seen multiple specialists without a definitive diagnosis, it may be beneficial to consult a rehabilitation specialist or a neurologist who can perform a thorough evaluation. They may recommend imaging studies, such as an MRI or nerve conduction studies, to assess for any structural issues or nerve damage. A physical therapist may also be able to help identify any movement dysfunctions that could be contributing to your symptoms.
3. Potential Treatment Options:
While you have tried various medications, including pain relievers and muscle relaxants, it’s important to consider a multidisciplinary approach to treatment. Here are some strategies that may help:
- Physical Therapy: Engaging in a tailored physical therapy program can help improve muscle strength, flexibility, and posture, which may alleviate some of your pain and discomfort. A physical therapist can also teach you proper body mechanics to reduce strain during daily activities.
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): If stress or anxiety is exacerbating your symptoms, CBT can be an effective way to manage these feelings and improve your overall well-being.
- Sleep Hygiene: Establishing a regular sleep routine and creating a comfortable sleep environment can help improve your sleep quality. This includes maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, creating a relaxing bedtime routine, and ensuring your sleep environment is conducive to rest.
- Alternative Therapies: Some individuals find relief through acupuncture, massage therapy, or chiropractic care. These modalities can help reduce muscle tension and improve circulation.
- Lifestyle Modifications: Regular low-impact exercise, such as walking or swimming, can help improve overall muscle function and reduce pain. Additionally, practicing relaxation techniques, such as yoga or meditation, may help manage stress and improve sleep quality.
4. Follow-Up and Persistence:
It’s crucial to maintain open communication with your healthcare providers about your ongoing symptoms and any changes you experience. If you feel that your current treatment plan is not effective, don’t hesitate to seek a second opinion or ask for a referral to a specialist who may have more experience with chronic pain conditions.
In conclusion, while your situation is undoubtedly challenging, there are multiple avenues to explore for relief. A comprehensive approach that includes medical evaluation, physical therapy, lifestyle changes, and possibly psychological support may provide you with the tools you need to manage your symptoms effectively. Remember, you are not alone in this journey, and with persistence and the right support, improvement is possible.
