How much more can I grow?
Hello doctor, I recently visited the endocrinology department and had an X-ray of the growth plate in my left hand.
It shows that there is only one line remaining, which may indicate that I am close to completing my growth.
I would like to know how much more I can grow.
I am currently in the third year of junior high school, I often play basketball, and I go to bed before 10:50 PM.
My height is 167 cm, my father is 173 cm, and my mother is 155 cm.
I generally have a good appetite and do not have picky eating habits, but I have not grown much from second to third grade.
Why is that? Do I have a chance to reach 170 cm? In the second grade, I was 167 cm, and now in the third grade, I am 167.8 cm.

After the age of 15, height growth typically ceases, which is influenced by genetics as well as nutrition and exercise.
Each individual's height will vary.

When it comes to height growth, understanding the role of growth plates is crucial. Growth plates, or epiphyseal plates, are areas of developing cartilage tissue located near the ends of long bones. They are responsible for the lengthening of bones during childhood and adolescence. Once these plates close, which typically occurs in late adolescence, further height increase is unlikely.
At 15 years old and with your growth plates nearly fused, your potential for further growth is limited. The fact that you have not seen significant height increase from 167 cm to 167.8 cm over the course of a year suggests that your growth may be slowing down as you approach the end of your growth period. Generally, boys experience their growth spurts earlier than girls, often peaking around ages 13 to 15, and then gradually slowing down.
Your current height of 167 cm, combined with your parents' heights (father at 173 cm and mother at 155 cm), indicates that your genetic potential for height is likely influenced by your family background. While genetics play a significant role in determining height, environmental factors such as nutrition, physical activity, and sleep also contribute.
You mentioned that you regularly play basketball and maintain a relatively healthy diet without being picky. These are positive factors that can support growth. However, sleep is also critical for growth hormone production, and you should aim for consistent, adequate sleep each night. The recommended amount for teenagers is around 8-10 hours.
Regarding your question about whether you can reach 170 cm, it is difficult to predict with certainty. Given that your growth plates are nearly fused, the likelihood of achieving that height is slim. However, there may still be a slight chance for minor growth, especially if your growth plates have not completely closed yet. Engaging in activities like basketball can help maintain good posture and overall health, which can make you appear taller, even if your actual height does not increase significantly.
If you are concerned about your growth or have questions about your health, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare professional who specializes in endocrinology or pediatrics. They can provide personalized insights based on your growth plate assessment and overall health.
In summary, while you may have limited potential for further height increase, maintaining a healthy lifestyle with proper nutrition, regular exercise, and adequate sleep can support your overall well-being. Embrace your current height and focus on aspects of your life that you can control, such as your health, fitness, and personal development. Remember, height is just one aspect of who you are, and confidence and self-esteem come from within.
