How to grow taller?

I am currently 17 years old, 161 cm tall.
When I was 14, the doctor said that my growth plates were nearly closed.
During three years of junior high and one year of high school, I only grew 1 cm.
I would like to know if there is still a possibility for me to reach at least 165 cm.
My diet is normal, but I often suffer from insomnia.
My younger brother, who is 15 and has a similar routine, is already nearly 20 cm taller than me.
I want to know if there is any way for me to grow a bit more.
Thank you! 🙏

Jy, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/10/22

Hello, based on the information from the article, it seems that your growth plates are closer to closing.
Whether you can reach a height of 165 cm is uncertain and difficult to determine.
However, height is definitely just a small part; your demeanor will ultimately determine your stature.

At 17 years old, your potential for further height growth is largely determined by the status of your growth plates, which are areas of developing cartilage tissue near the ends of long bones. These growth plates are responsible for the lengthening of bones during childhood and adolescence. Once they close, which typically occurs after puberty, further height increase is unlikely.

From your description, it seems that your growth plates were already close to closing when you were 14. This is a critical age, as most individuals experience their peak growth spurts during puberty, which can last until the growth plates fully close. For males, this process can extend into the late teens, but the majority of height increase occurs before the age of 18.

You mentioned that you have only grown 1 cm over the past four years, which suggests that your growth plates may have already begun to close. While there is always a possibility of minor height increases due to factors such as posture or spinal decompression during the day, significant increases in height are unlikely at this stage.

Regarding your concerns about sleep and its impact on growth, sleep is indeed crucial for overall health and development. During deep sleep, the body releases growth hormone, which plays a role in growth and development. Chronic sleep deprivation can hinder this process, potentially affecting growth. If you are experiencing insomnia or poor sleep quality, it may be beneficial to address these issues, as improving your sleep hygiene could have positive effects on your overall health.

In terms of nutrition, a balanced diet rich in calcium, vitamin D, and protein is essential for bone health and growth. While you mentioned that your diet is normal, ensuring that you are consuming adequate amounts of these nutrients can support your overall health, even if it may not significantly impact your height at this stage.

It’s also important to consider genetic factors. Height is largely influenced by genetics, and if your family members are shorter, it may be a contributing factor to your current height. Your brother's height may not necessarily reflect your potential, as individual growth patterns can vary widely even among siblings.

In conclusion, while you may have a slight chance of growing taller, it is unlikely that you will reach 165 cm given your current age and growth history. However, focusing on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including proper nutrition, regular exercise, and good sleep habits, can help you maximize your potential and overall well-being. If you have ongoing concerns about your growth or health, consulting with a healthcare professional or an endocrinologist may provide you with more personalized insights and guidance.
