Scoliosis of 8 degrees?

Hello, doctor! I have an 8-degree scoliosis.
Is that normal? My growth plates have already closed, so will the degree of scoliosis increase? Can I use a pull-up bar to straighten my spine? I am 18 years and 2 months old.
Thank you for your response!

Wu Ji-yuan, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/04/11

Dr. Wang Shouji reply Orthopedics

Hello: The growth plates have closed with an 8-degree scoliosis, so the chance of worsening is low.
Performing pull-ups for correction is unlikely to be effective.
If there are no symptoms, monitoring is sufficient.

Scoliosis is a condition characterized by an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine. An 8-degree scoliosis is generally considered mild. In adolescents and young adults, especially those who have reached skeletal maturity (as indicated by the closure of growth plates), the likelihood of significant progression of scoliosis is reduced. This is because the spine is no longer growing, and the structural changes that lead to worsening curvature are less likely to occur.

In your case, since you are 18 years old and your growth plates have closed, it is unlikely that your scoliosis will worsen significantly. However, it is essential to monitor your condition regularly, as individual cases can vary. Some individuals may experience discomfort or pain associated with scoliosis, while others may not have any symptoms at all.

Regarding your question about using a pull-up bar to "straighten" your spine, it's important to clarify that while exercises can help strengthen the muscles around the spine and improve posture, they cannot change the structural curvature of the spine itself. Stretching and strengthening exercises may provide relief from discomfort and improve overall spinal health, but they won't eliminate the curvature. Engaging in activities that promote good posture and core strength, such as yoga or Pilates, can be beneficial.

If you are experiencing pain or discomfort related to your scoliosis, or if you have concerns about your spinal health, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional, such as an orthopedic specialist or a physical therapist. They can provide personalized recommendations based on your specific situation and help you develop a safe and effective exercise program.

In summary, an 8-degree scoliosis is considered mild and is unlikely to progress further since your growth plates are closed. While exercises can help with muscle strength and posture, they won't correct the curvature. Regular monitoring and professional guidance are recommended to ensure your spinal health remains stable.
