Please inquire about hemorrhoid ligation?

Hello, Director.
I have a small question to ask.
I underwent a hemorrhoid ligation surgery for internal hemorrhoids on June 2nd.
For 3 to 4 days post-surgery, I experienced some bleeding, which I read is a normal phenomenon.
Today, June 10th, after having a bowel movement, I noticed that the area where the internal hemorrhoid used to be feels like it has recurred, as it feels swollen and protruding.
After soaking in warm water post-bowel movement, it retracted when I gently pushed it back in.
Could this be related to the internal hemorrhoid not having fully resolved yet?

Answer: Since it is unclear whether the location of the ligation and the location of the hemorrhoid prolapse are the same, I cannot answer your question.
However, it is possible that swelling from the ligation site could cause this situation.
I recommend returning to the outpatient clinic for a check-up with your physician.

More Info

After undergoing a hemorrhoid ligation surgery, it is common for patients to experience some post-operative symptoms, including bleeding and discomfort. Your experience of noticing blood for several days post-surgery is not unusual, as it can be a normal part of the healing process. However, it’s essential to monitor these symptoms closely to ensure that they do not indicate a complication.

In the case of internal hemorrhoids, the ligation procedure involves placing a rubber band around the base of the hemorrhoid to cut off its blood supply. Over time, the tissue will die and fall off, usually within a week or two. The bleeding you are experiencing could be related to this process, especially if it is light and not accompanied by severe pain or other concerning symptoms.

Regarding the lump you feel at the site of the previous internal hemorrhoid, it is possible that this is a remnant of the hemorrhoid that has not yet fallen off or a new hemorrhoid that has developed. The fact that it can be pushed back in after a warm soak suggests that it may still be related to the original condition. Sometimes, after ligation, patients may experience a temporary swelling or a feeling of fullness at the site as the tissue heals.

Here are some important considerations and recommendations for your recovery:
1. Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on the amount of bleeding. If it becomes heavy or is accompanied by severe pain, fever, or any signs of infection (such as increased redness or swelling), you should contact your healthcare provider immediately.

2. Pain Management: It’s common to experience discomfort after the procedure. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage this, but always consult your doctor before taking any medication.

3. Dietary Adjustments: To prevent constipation and straining during bowel movements, maintain a high-fiber diet and stay well-hydrated. This can help ensure smoother bowel movements and reduce pressure on the surgical site.

4. Warm Baths: Taking warm sitz baths can provide relief and promote healing. This practice can help soothe the area and reduce swelling.

5. Follow-Up Appointments: It’s crucial to attend any scheduled follow-up appointments with your surgeon or healthcare provider. They can assess your healing progress and address any concerns you may have.

6. Avoid Straining: During bowel movements, try to avoid straining, as this can exacerbate symptoms and potentially lead to complications.

7. Recognizing Recurrence: If you notice that the lump persists or worsens, or if you experience recurrent symptoms similar to those before your surgery, it’s essential to consult your doctor. They may need to evaluate whether further treatment is necessary.

In summary, while some bleeding and discomfort after hemorrhoid ligation are normal, it’s important to monitor your symptoms closely. If you have any doubts or if your symptoms change, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation and ensure that your recovery is on track.
