Are you still growing taller?

I am currently 14 years old, approximately 165 cm tall, and I have developed pubic hair as well as underarm hair (which seems to be still developing).
I have a habit of masturbating about two to three times a week, and I usually go to bed around 11:00 to 11:30 PM.
I take some supplements, exercise regularly, and also skip rope.
My dad is 168 cm tall, my mom is 158 cm, and my brother has grown to over 170 cm.
However, I have not experienced a sudden growth spurt yet.
Some of my classmates, who were shorter than me before, have had a growth spurt and are now about my height.
I also have classmates who have developed underarm hair and facial hair but haven't grown much taller since then.
Is it possible for me to reach a height of over 170 cm?

Dr. Xu Peiqi reply Family Medicine

Hello, generally speaking, a sudden increase in height is a sign of early puberty, while the mid-puberty stage is characterized by the development of secondary sexual characteristics.
You have a good understanding of your body condition and have done your homework, so I believe you already have a general idea of the answer in your mind.
Being aware of your body and taking the initiative to learn about it is commendable, and I believe you will have a happy puberty.
Here is my response: You will certainly continue to grow taller, but I cannot predict how tall you will become.
In addition to genetic factors, physical activities (especially weight-bearing exercises like jumping rope and playing basketball) and maintaining good posture (to avoid scoliosis) can contribute to increased height.
Keep it up! It's also important to enrich your inner self; having height without intelligence is not appealing to anyone, including girls.
Best wishes to you.

At 14 years old and standing at approximately 165 cm, you are at a pivotal stage in your growth and development. The teenage years are characterized by significant physical changes, including growth spurts that can vary widely among individuals. It's important to understand that while genetics play a significant role in determining your height, other factors such as nutrition, sleep, and physical activity also contribute to your growth potential.

Firstly, let's address the biological aspect of growth. During puberty, which typically occurs between ages 10 and 14 for girls and 12 and 16 for boys, the body undergoes rapid changes due to hormonal shifts. The presence of secondary sexual characteristics, such as pubic and underarm hair, indicates that you are in the midst of this developmental phase. Growth spurts often occur during this time, and while some individuals may experience a sudden increase in height, others may grow more gradually.

Your current height of 165 cm places you within a normal range for your age, but it’s understandable to feel concerned, especially when comparing yourself to peers. The fact that your father is 168 cm and your mother is 158 cm suggests that your genetic potential may be somewhat limited, but it does not rule out the possibility of reaching or exceeding 170 cm. Your brother’s height of over 170 cm indicates that there is potential for growth in your family, which is a positive sign.

Regarding your question about whether you can still grow taller, the answer is yes, you likely still have growth potential. The growth plates in your bones, which are areas of developing cartilage, typically remain open until the late teens or even early twenties. The closure of these plates signals the end of vertical growth. Since you are only 14, it is probable that your growth plates have not yet closed, allowing for further height increase.

To maximize your growth potential, consider the following recommendations:
1. Nutrition: Ensure you are consuming a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients. Key nutrients for growth include calcium, vitamin D, protein, and other vitamins and minerals. Foods such as dairy products, lean meats, fish, fruits, and vegetables should be staples in your diet.

2. Sleep: Quality sleep is crucial for growth, as the body releases growth hormone during deep sleep. Aim for 8-10 hours of sleep per night and establish a consistent sleep schedule. Avoid late-night activities that could disrupt your sleep cycle.

3. Physical Activity: Regular exercise, especially activities that promote stretching and strength, can support growth. Sports like basketball, swimming, and even jumping rope can be beneficial. Physical activity not only helps in maintaining a healthy weight but also stimulates growth hormone production.

4. Posture: Maintaining good posture can help you appear taller and may also contribute to spinal health. Avoid slouching and engage in exercises that strengthen your core and back muscles.

5. Avoid Stress: High levels of stress can negatively impact your overall health and growth. Engage in activities that help you relax and manage stress effectively.

As for the fluctuation in your height throughout the day, it is normal for individuals to measure slightly taller in the morning than in the evening. This is due to the compression of the spinal discs throughout the day as you stand and move around.
In conclusion, while it is difficult to predict exactly how much taller you will grow, there is still potential for you to reach or exceed 170 cm. Focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and remember that growth can vary significantly from person to person. If you have ongoing concerns about your growth or development, consider consulting a healthcare professional for personalized advice and assessment.
