Height stagnation?

Hello Doctor,
I am a 15-year-old freshman in high school.
My height has been around 168 cm from the end of middle school to now.
I am very worried that I might not grow any taller, so I asked my mom to look up information online.
She said she would give me herbal medicine for growth and milk, and advised me to jump rope more and not to overthink it.
I feel distressed because she doesn't seem to take my height seriously, so I am seeking your help.
I want to grow to 175 cm, but many people say it depends on whether my growth plates have fused, and many classmates say there’s no hope, which makes me very depressed.
Doctor, what can I do to grow another 8 cm?

Height is related to genetic inheritance from parents.
If the parents are taller, the children are likely to be taller as well.
A height of 168 cm is actually not considered short.
If the growth plates have not yet closed, there is still a possibility for further growth.
Paying attention to nutrition and engaging in regular exercise can provide opportunities for additional height increase.

Height stagnation during adolescence can be a source of significant concern for many young individuals, especially when they feel they are not meeting the expectations set by their peers or family. At 15 years old and standing at 168 cm, it is understandable that you are worried about your growth potential. However, it is essential to approach this situation with a balanced perspective, understanding both the biological factors at play and the lifestyle choices that can influence growth.

Firstly, it is important to recognize that growth during adolescence is largely influenced by genetics, nutrition, and hormonal changes. The growth plates, or epiphyseal plates, are areas of developing cartilage tissue near the ends of long bones. These plates are responsible for bone growth, and once they close, which typically occurs after puberty, further height increase is unlikely. For most boys, growth plates close around the ages of 16 to 18, while girls usually experience this earlier. Therefore, monitoring your growth plate status through X-rays can provide insight into your growth potential.

In your case, since you are still in your mid-teens, there may still be some opportunity for growth. Here are several strategies that can help optimize your growth potential:
1. Nutrition: A well-balanced diet is crucial for growth. Ensure you are consuming adequate amounts of protein, calcium, vitamin D, and other essential nutrients. Foods rich in these nutrients include dairy products (like milk and yogurt), lean meats, fish, eggs, nuts, and a variety of fruits and vegetables. Calcium and vitamin D are particularly important for bone health, while protein supports overall growth.

2. Physical Activity: Engaging in regular physical activity can stimulate growth hormone production. Activities that promote stretching and jumping, such as basketball, swimming, and skipping rope, can be particularly beneficial. Aim for at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise most days of the week.

3. Sleep: Growth hormone is primarily released during sleep, so ensuring you get enough quality sleep is vital. Teenagers typically need about 8 to 10 hours of sleep per night. Establish a regular sleep schedule and create a restful environment to improve your sleep quality.

4. Posture: Maintaining good posture can help you appear taller and may also contribute to spinal health. Focus on exercises that strengthen your core and back muscles, which can help you maintain an upright posture.

5. Stress Management: Psychological factors can also impact growth. High levels of stress can affect hormone levels and overall health. Engage in activities that help you relax, such as mindfulness, meditation, or hobbies you enjoy.

6. Consult a Healthcare Professional: If you are concerned about your growth, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare provider or an endocrinologist. They can assess your growth patterns, evaluate your bone age through X-rays, and provide personalized advice based on your individual circumstances.

While it is natural to desire a specific height, it is essential to focus on what you can control—your health and well-being. Remember that height does not define your worth or capabilities. Many successful individuals come in all shapes and sizes. Embrace your unique qualities, and focus on developing your skills and interests.
In conclusion, while there are no guaranteed methods to increase height significantly, adopting a healthy lifestyle can maximize your growth potential. Stay positive, keep active, and maintain a balanced diet, and remember that your self-worth is not solely determined by your height.
