Retinal laser treatment, water stain marks?
Hello Director Gao, I apologize for disturbing you.
I have myopia of 800 degrees in both eyes and experience floaters.
I have an eye exam every six months, and two months ago, I underwent retinal laser treatment in both eyes.
However, the day after the laser treatment, when I looked at the sky (I have a habit of doing this to observe any changes in the floaters against a light background), I noticed that both eyes had what appeared to be water streaks or water marks in my field of vision, resembling liquid flowing (the vision or perception of objects is not distorted; it’s just that many water marks seem to float in front of me).
This has not disappeared yet.
I have researched many articles but have not found similar symptoms.
Why am I experiencing this? Is this a complication, or will it resolve on its own after some time? I am certain that this symptom appeared right after the laser treatment.
My ophthalmologist is currently abroad and I am unsure when they will return, so I am a bit anxious.
I would appreciate your response.
Thank you.

Dear troubled university student,
This situation is indicative of vitreous liquefaction.
The liquefied vitreous humor flows within the cavity, which can create a sensation similar to that of liquid moving.
Over time, there may be various changes, and it might also become less noticeable.
There is no absolute relationship with laser treatment.
Generally speaking, this is harmless and is a physiological phenomenon.
If you are concerned, any ophthalmologist can perform an examination for you.
At the Puzih Hospital Eye Clinic in Taiwan, the hours are as follows:
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday: 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Wednesday: 2:00 PM – 4:30 PM
Please note that online responses should only be used as a reference; it is essential to seek care at a medical facility if necessary.
I hope to have the opportunity to assist you.
Sincerely,
Gao Pilin

After undergoing retinal laser treatment, experiencing visual phenomena such as "watermark vision" can be concerning. This symptom, which you describe as seeing water-like streaks or marks in your visual field, is not uncommon following retinal procedures. It is essential to understand the potential causes and implications of these symptoms, as well as what steps you can take to monitor your recovery.
Firstly, the appearance of water-like streaks or marks in your vision could be attributed to several factors related to the healing process of the retina and the surrounding structures. After laser treatment, it is possible for the retina to experience temporary swelling or edema, which can lead to visual distortions. This swelling can affect the way light is processed by the retina, resulting in unusual visual phenomena. Additionally, the presence of floaters, which you mentioned you have, can also contribute to the perception of water-like marks, especially if there are changes in the vitreous gel that fills the eye.
Another potential cause for your symptoms could be related to the healing of the cornea, particularly if there was any impact on the corneal surface during the procedure. Corneal edema or irregularities in the corneal surface can lead to visual disturbances, including blurriness or the perception of water-like images. It is important to note that these symptoms may gradually improve as the eye heals, but the timeline can vary from person to person.
In terms of whether this is a complication, it is crucial to differentiate between normal post-operative symptoms and those that may indicate a more serious issue. While the symptoms you describe are not uncommon, if they persist or worsen, it is advisable to seek further evaluation. Complications such as retinal detachment or significant changes in the vitreous could present with similar symptoms, but they are typically accompanied by other signs, such as sudden changes in vision, increased floaters, or flashes of light.
Given that your ophthalmologist is currently unavailable, it would be prudent to consider a follow-up appointment with another eye care professional if your symptoms do not improve within a reasonable timeframe. They can perform a thorough examination, including optical coherence tomography (OCT) or other imaging techniques, to assess the health of your retina and vitreous.
In the meantime, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If you notice any sudden changes in your vision, such as a significant increase in floaters, flashes of light, or a shadow in your peripheral vision, seek immediate medical attention. These could be signs of a more serious condition that requires prompt intervention.
As for your daily activities, it is generally advisable to avoid strenuous activities or environments that could put additional stress on your eyes until you have a clearer understanding of your condition. Protecting your eyes from bright lights and avoiding eye strain can also be beneficial during the recovery process.
In summary, while the watermark vision you are experiencing after retinal laser treatment can be concerning, it is often a temporary symptom related to the healing process. However, it is essential to remain vigilant and seek further evaluation if symptoms persist or worsen. Your eye health is paramount, and timely intervention can help ensure the best possible outcome.
