Taking Seroquel enhances attention, but erectile function is not sustained!
Hello doctor, I have been taking one 25mg Strattera every morning to help regulate my attention.
However, recently I have been experiencing issues with erectile function during sexual activity, as I find that my erection does not last and quickly goes soft.
Could this be related to the side effects of taking Strattera? If I stop taking the medication, will the issue with maintaining an erection improve to a normal state? I never had erectile dysfunction issues before taking Strattera.
Could you please advise if there is a connection between taking Strattera and my erectile problems? If I decide to stop the medication, how long will it take to restore normal erectile function?

Dr. Wang Yazhen reply Psychiatry
Hello Aston: If you refer to the medication leaflet for Strattera, you will find the following information: The most common side effects of STRATTERA (with an incidence of 5% or higher and at least twice the rate of placebo patients) include: constipation, dry mouth, nausea, fatigue, decreased appetite, insomnia, erectile dysfunction, urinary hesitancy and/or urinary retention and/or difficulty urinating, menstrual difficulties, and hot flashes.
Therefore, these could potentially be side effects of the medication; however, since other physical factors cannot be ruled out, it is recommended that you return for a follow-up consultation with your physician to discuss how to adjust the medication.
Thank you!

More Info
Strattera (atomoxetine) is a medication primarily used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). While it is not a stimulant like many other ADHD medications, it can still have side effects that may impact sexual function, including erectile dysfunction (ED).
In your case, it is important to consider that Strattera has been reported to cause sexual side effects in some individuals. These can include decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and difficulties with ejaculation. Although not everyone experiences these side effects, they are documented in clinical studies and patient reports. The mechanism behind this is not entirely understood, but it is thought to be related to the way Strattera affects norepinephrine and serotonin levels in the brain, which can influence sexual arousal and function.
Given that you have not experienced erectile issues prior to starting Strattera, it is plausible that your current difficulties may be linked to the medication. However, it is also important to consider other factors that could contribute to erectile dysfunction, such as stress, anxiety, relationship issues, or other health conditions.
If you decide to stop taking Strattera, it is essential to do so under the guidance of your healthcare provider. They can help you taper off the medication safely and monitor any withdrawal symptoms or changes in your condition. The timeline for recovery of erectile function after discontinuing Strattera can vary from person to person. Some individuals may notice improvements within a few days to weeks, while others may take longer to return to their baseline function.
It is also worth noting that if you stop taking Strattera, you may experience a return of ADHD symptoms, which could also indirectly affect your sexual performance due to increased anxiety or stress. Therefore, it is crucial to have a comprehensive discussion with your doctor about your concerns regarding erectile dysfunction and the potential impact of Strattera on your sexual health. They may suggest alternative treatments for ADHD that have a lower risk of sexual side effects or recommend additional strategies to manage both your ADHD and any sexual health concerns.
In summary, while Strattera can potentially affect erectile function, it is essential to evaluate all contributing factors and work closely with your healthcare provider to determine the best course of action for your situation.
