Does the use of topical steroids for cheilitis affect the effectiveness of oral contraceptives?
Hello! I have been taking birth control pills, and recently I developed cheilitis.
My doctor prescribed an anti-inflammatory steroid ointment to apply around my mouth, but sometimes when I eat, I might accidentally ingest some of the ointment.
Will this affect the effectiveness of the birth control pills? Thank you for your answer.

When it comes to the use of topical steroids for conditions like cheilitis (inflammation of the lips) and their potential impact on the efficacy of birth control pills, it's important to understand how these medications work and their absorption in the body.
Topical steroids, such as those prescribed for cheilitis, are designed to reduce inflammation and are typically applied directly to the affected area. The absorption of these medications through the skin is generally minimal. Most studies indicate that the systemic absorption of topical steroids is less than 1% when applied to intact skin. This means that only a very small amount of the steroid enters the bloodstream, which is unlikely to have any significant effect on other medications, including oral contraceptives.
Oral contraceptives work by delivering hormones (estrogen and progestin) that prevent ovulation and create changes in the uterine lining to prevent pregnancy. The effectiveness of these pills is primarily determined by their hormonal content and how consistently they are taken. The presence of a topical steroid in the system, especially in such small amounts, should not interfere with the hormonal mechanisms of birth control pills.
However, if you accidentally ingest some of the topical steroid while eating, the amount ingested is likely to be very small and would still be considered negligible in terms of affecting the efficacy of your birth control. The primary concern with ingesting topical medications is usually related to potential side effects or toxicity from the ingredients in the cream, rather than an interaction with oral contraceptives.
It's also worth noting that the use of topical steroids should be monitored, especially if used over a prolonged period or on large areas of the skin, as they can lead to side effects such as skin thinning or other local reactions. If you have concerns about the use of the steroid cream or its potential effects, it’s advisable to discuss these with your healthcare provider. They can provide guidance tailored to your specific situation and may suggest alternative treatments if necessary.
In summary, using a topical steroid for cheilitis should not affect the efficacy of your birth control pills. The systemic absorption of these medications is minimal, and any accidental ingestion during eating is unlikely to pose a risk to the effectiveness of your contraceptive method. Always consult with your healthcare provider if you have any concerns or experience any unusual symptoms while using new medications.
