Steroid injections and preemptive contraceptive pills?
Hello doctor, thank you for responding to this question.
I have been taking the contraceptive pill for over two years.
On Wednesday, July 28th, around 4 PM, I received a steroid injection for inflammation due to discomfort in my elbow joint.
I would like to know if having unprotected intercourse with ejaculation on Saturday, July 31st, would affect the effectiveness of the contraceptive.
Thank you, doctor.

The use of steroid injections, particularly corticosteroids, can raise questions about their impact on birth control effectiveness. In your case, you have been on oral contraceptives for over two years and received a steroid injection for inflammation in your elbow on July 28. You then had unprotected intercourse on July 31.
Generally, corticosteroids do not have a direct effect on the efficacy of hormonal contraceptives like birth control pills. The primary mechanism of action for these pills is to prevent ovulation, thicken cervical mucus, and thin the uterine lining, which are not influenced by the presence of corticosteroids in the body. Studies have shown that corticosteroids, when used in typical therapeutic doses, do not significantly alter the metabolism of contraceptive hormones or their effectiveness.
However, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. First, if you have been consistently taking your birth control pills as prescribed, the likelihood of pregnancy remains low, even after receiving a steroid injection. It is essential to ensure that you are taking your pills at the same time every day and not missing any doses, as this is crucial for maintaining their effectiveness.
Second, while corticosteroids themselves do not affect birth control efficacy, they can have other side effects that might indirectly influence your health and well-being. For example, corticosteroids can affect your mood, appetite, and overall health, which might lead to changes in your routine or lifestyle that could impact your adherence to your birth control regimen.
If you have concerns about the timing of your steroid injection and the potential for pregnancy, it may be wise to consult with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and the specific details of your situation. If you are worried about the possibility of pregnancy, consider taking a home pregnancy test if your period is late or if you experience any unusual symptoms.
In summary, based on current medical understanding, the steroid injection you received should not affect the effectiveness of your birth control pills, provided you have been taking them consistently. However, if you have any lingering concerns or experience any changes in your health, it is always best to discuss these with your healthcare provider for tailored advice and peace of mind.
