Muscle Pain: Concerns About Discomfort Near the Armpit - Family Medicine

Suspected muscle pain?

Hello doctor, near the joint under my left armpit, I feel a protrusion and some pain when I raise my arm.
I'm not sure if it's a muscle strain, but my family says it feels like there's no hard mass, just muscle, which makes me quite worried.
Even though I'm a male, I'm still concerned that it could be a concerning lump in the breast area, although it doesn't really feel like breast tissue.
Can there be muscle strains in that area? I also noticed a slight protrusion on the right side, but it doesn't hurt when I press on it.
I haven't done any sports today, so this feels a bit strange.
By the way, can I apply the pain relief medication that my orthopedic doctor prescribed, which contains Etofenamate? Thank you for your response!

Dear Mr.
Dada:
1.
Pain and tenderness in the left axilla may commonly indicate issues such as muscle strain, neuropathy, pneumothorax, myocardial ischemia, infection, tumors, or shingles, among others.
If the pain persists, it is advisable to discuss this with your primary care physician or seek follow-up at a pulmonology clinic.

2.
While topical anti-inflammatory medications generally have minimal side effects aside from occasional skin allergies, it is still recommended that you consult with your treating physician before proceeding.

Muscle pain, especially in the area near the armpit, can be concerning, and it's understandable that you're worried about the discomfort you're experiencing. Let's break down your symptoms and address your concerns.

First, the area near the armpit contains several muscles, including the pectoralis major, latissimus dorsi, and the serratus anterior, among others. These muscles can indeed become strained or injured, leading to discomfort or pain when you lift your arm. The sensation of pressure or pain when you raise your arm could indicate a muscle strain, particularly if you have engaged in any unusual physical activity or even if you have been in a position that puts strain on these muscles for an extended period.

It's also important to consider the possibility of other conditions that could cause pain in this area. For instance, issues related to the shoulder joint, such as rotator cuff injuries or tendinitis, could manifest as pain near the armpit. Additionally, lymph nodes in the armpit can become swollen due to infections or other medical conditions, which might also cause discomfort. However, if you are not feeling any hard lumps or swelling, it is less likely to be a serious issue.

Regarding your concern about breast health, while it is good to be vigilant, the sensation you describe does not typically align with breast-related issues, especially if you are not feeling any distinct lumps or changes in the breast tissue itself. If you have any concerns about breast health, it is always advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough examination.

As for the discomfort you are feeling on the right side, it is not uncommon for muscle tension or strain to occur symmetrically, especially if you have been using your arms in a similar manner. The fact that you do not feel pain when pressing on the right side is a positive sign, suggesting that it may not be an acute injury.

In terms of treatment, using the topical pain relief medication that was prescribed to you (Etofenamate) can be beneficial for muscle soreness. This medication is often used to alleviate pain and inflammation in muscles and joints. Applying it to the affected area may help reduce discomfort and promote healing. However, be sure to follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider regarding its use.

In addition to topical treatments, consider incorporating gentle stretching and strengthening exercises for the shoulder and upper body. These can help improve flexibility and reduce the risk of future injuries. If the pain persists or worsens, or if you notice any new symptoms, it would be wise to seek medical attention for a more comprehensive evaluation.

In summary, the discomfort you are experiencing near your armpit is likely related to muscle strain or tension, especially if there are no hard lumps or significant swelling. Using your prescribed pain relief medication can help, and gentle stretching may also be beneficial. Always listen to your body, and if you have ongoing concerns, do not hesitate to consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation and guidance.
