Is It Normal for the Foreskin to Itch After Applying Iodine? - Urology

The foreskin comes into contact with iodine solution?

Hello doctor, I accidentally scratched the outer side of my foreskin with my fingernail while taking a shower.
I applied iodine and tetracycline, but I'm not sure if the itching I'm experiencing is due to the iodine; it subsides after a while.
Is this normal? Also, is it okay for me to apply these medications? I was prescribed tetracycline by a urologist in the past when I had slight skin abrasions on my glans from cleaning too thoroughly.
Thank you!

Hello: The application of povidone-iodine may cause irritation, but it is harmless and only causes a stinging sensation.
Wishing you good health.
Tetracycline is okay, but do not use it for too long and be mindful of the expiration date.

More Info

It is not uncommon for the foreskin or surrounding areas to experience itching or irritation after applying iodine, especially if the skin is sensitive or has been recently injured. Iodine is an antiseptic that can cause a mild stinging or itching sensation upon application, particularly on broken or sensitive skin. This reaction is generally temporary and should subside shortly after the application.
When you accidentally scratched the foreskin and applied iodine, it is possible that the irritation you felt was due to the iodine itself. Iodine can be quite potent, and while it is effective for disinfecting wounds, it can also cause localized irritation. If the itching persists or worsens, it may indicate an allergic reaction or sensitivity to the iodine. In such cases, it would be advisable to discontinue use and consult a healthcare professional.

Regarding the use of tetracycline (四環素), it is an antibiotic that is typically used to treat bacterial infections. If it was prescribed to you previously for a similar issue, it may be appropriate to use it again, but only under the guidance of a healthcare provider. It's important to ensure that any medication you apply is suitable for the current condition of your skin and that it does not interact negatively with other treatments you may be using.

In general, when treating minor skin injuries or irritations, it is crucial to keep the area clean and avoid further irritation. If you experience significant discomfort, persistent itching, or any signs of infection (such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge), you should seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can evaluate your symptoms and recommend appropriate treatment options.

In summary, mild itching after applying iodine can be a normal reaction, especially on sensitive or broken skin. However, if the itching persists or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms, it is best to consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation and management. Always follow the advice of your healthcare provider regarding the use of medications and treatments for skin conditions.
