Is it still possible to grow taller?
Hello, doctor.
I will be turning 20 this year.
My parents' heights are 173 cm and 157 cm.
I started my menstrual period in the sixth grade, and currently, my height is only 148 cm (my mother says I should have at least surpassed 155 cm, but the reality is quite far from that 😭).
I haven't grown since the end of my first year of high school.
Is there still a possibility for me to grow taller? Are there any methods to extend my stature? (Excluding surgery, I hope for natural methods, such as yoga or jumping rope—do they help?) I am open to lengthening any part of my body, not just my legs; I just hope to grow taller.
Some traditional Chinese medicine claims to help adults grow taller—are these scams, or is there a real possibility? After all, living with this height in society is quite challenging; on the bright side, I am petite and cute, but on the downside, it feels like malnutrition.
😢

In adults, the growth plates of the bones have closed, which theoretically means that it is not possible to grow taller unless limb lengthening surgery is performed to extend the lower limbs by four to five centimeters.
Exercise, nutritional supplementation, or the use of medications are ineffective in increasing height.

At the age of 20, the likelihood of growing taller is significantly diminished due to the closure of the growth plates in the bones. Growth plates, or epiphyseal plates, are areas of developing cartilage tissue near the ends of long bones. During puberty, these plates allow for bone growth, but they typically close after the growth spurts associated with adolescence. For most individuals, this closure occurs around the late teens to early twenties.
In your case, with a height of 148 cm and parents who are 173 cm and 157 cm tall, it is understandable to feel concerned about your height. While genetics play a crucial role in determining height, environmental factors such as nutrition, physical activity, and overall health during the growth years also contribute. However, once the growth plates have closed, which is likely the case for you at 20, natural height increase becomes virtually impossible.
Natural methods to potentially enhance your posture and overall body appearance include engaging in regular physical activity, maintaining a balanced diet, and ensuring adequate sleep. Activities like yoga, swimming, and jumping rope can improve flexibility, strengthen muscles, and promote better posture, which may help you appear taller. However, these activities will not actually increase your height.
Yoga, for example, can help elongate the spine and improve posture, making you look taller and more confident. Certain yoga poses, such as the Mountain Pose (Tadasana) and the Cobra Pose (Bhujangasana), can help stretch the spine and improve alignment. Similarly, swimming is a full-body workout that can enhance muscle tone and posture, contributing to a taller appearance.
Regarding the use of herbal remedies or supplements claiming to increase height in adults, it is essential to approach such claims with skepticism. There is no scientific evidence supporting the idea that any herbal medicine or supplement can stimulate growth in individuals whose growth plates have already closed. Many of these products may be marketed misleadingly and could be considered scams.
In terms of nutrition, while a balanced diet rich in calcium, protein, and vitamins is crucial for overall health, it will not reverse the closure of growth plates. Ensuring you consume adequate nutrients can support your overall well-being and may help you maintain a healthy weight, which can also influence how you carry yourself.
In conclusion, while you may not be able to grow taller after the age of 20, focusing on posture, physical fitness, and self-confidence can significantly enhance your appearance and how you feel about yourself. Embracing your unique stature and working on aspects of your health and fitness can lead to a more positive self-image. If you have ongoing concerns about your height or health, consulting with a healthcare professional or a nutritionist may provide personalized guidance and support.
