Is it still possible to grow taller at the age of 20?
Doctor, I am 20 years old and 170 cm tall.
My father is about 167 cm, my grandmother is around 158 cm, and my brother is 180 cm.
I would like to know if I can still grow taller.
Since I am already over 20, is there really no chance at all? If I buy an inversion table and use it every day, can it really help elongate my body? I really want to reach 175 cm.

Dr. Shi Guozheng reply Orthopedics
The growth plates in humans cease to function after puberty, which means that theoretically, it is impossible to grow taller afterward.
Mechanical methods will not result in increased height.

The question of whether one can still grow taller after the age of 20 is a common concern, especially among young adults who are still seeking to achieve their desired height. To address this question, it is essential to understand the biological processes involved in growth and the factors that influence height.
Human growth in height primarily occurs through the elongation of long bones, which is facilitated by growth plates (epiphyseal plates) located at the ends of these bones. During childhood and adolescence, these growth plates are open, allowing for continued growth. However, as individuals reach the end of puberty, typically around the ages of 16 to 18 for females and 18 to 21 for males, these growth plates gradually close. Once the growth plates are fused, which can be confirmed through X-ray imaging, further height increase is unlikely.
In your case, at 20 years old and with a height of 170 cm, it is important to consider your family genetics, as height is largely influenced by hereditary factors. Given that your father is around 167 cm and your mother is approximately 158 cm, your height may be within the expected range based on your family's genetic background. Your brother's height of 180 cm suggests that there may be some variability in height within your family, but it is essential to remember that genetics plays a significant role.
Regarding your specific question about using an inversion table or any other mechanical device to increase height, it is crucial to clarify that such methods are unlikely to produce significant results. While inversion therapy may provide temporary relief for back pain and improve spinal decompression, it does not stimulate bone growth or elongation of the skeletal structure. The idea that one can "stretch" their body to gain height is a myth; the length of bones is determined by the growth plates, which, once closed, cannot be reopened or stimulated to grow further.
If you are still curious about your growth potential, a visit to an orthopedic specialist or endocrinologist can provide more personalized insights. They can perform a bone age assessment through X-rays to determine the status of your growth plates and offer a more accurate prediction of any remaining growth potential.
In addition to genetic factors, nutrition and lifestyle choices during the growth years can impact height. Adequate intake of essential nutrients, particularly calcium and vitamin D, is vital for bone health. Regular physical activity, especially weight-bearing exercises, can promote overall health and well-being, but they will not influence height once growth plates have closed.
In summary, while there may be some rare cases of individuals experiencing slight height increases into their early twenties, the general consensus in the medical community is that significant height growth after the closure of growth plates is highly unlikely. If you are concerned about your height or have specific goals in mind, focusing on overall health, posture, and confidence can be more beneficial than fixating on height alone.
