Sharp pain in the lower middle part of the ribs?

Hello doctor, recently I have been experiencing sharp pain in the lower middle part of my ribcage, sometimes accompanied by a burning sensation.
Additionally, I have been feeling intermittent burning in my chest for some time.
Could you please tell me what symptoms these might indicate? Do I need to make an appointment at the hospital? If so, which department should I see?

Dr. Zeng Guosen reply Internal Medicine

Hello, along with the burning sensation, you have also been experiencing intermittent heartburn in your chest for some time.
Based on your description, it seems like symptoms of heartburn, which may indicate gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
I recommend seeing a gastroenterologist for further evaluation.
Thank you for your question.

More Info

Lower rib pain can be a concerning symptom, and understanding its potential causes is crucial for determining the appropriate course of action. The symptoms you describe—sharp pain in the lower ribs accompanied by a burning sensation—can be indicative of various conditions, ranging from musculoskeletal issues to gastrointestinal problems.

Possible Causes of Lower Rib Pain
1. Musculoskeletal Issues: Pain in the lower ribs can often be attributed to muscle strain or injury. Activities that involve heavy lifting, sudden movements, or even prolonged poor posture can lead to muscle strain in the intercostal muscles (the muscles between the ribs) or the abdominal muscles. This type of pain is usually localized and may worsen with movement or certain positions.

2. Costochondritis: This is an inflammation of the cartilage that connects a rib to the sternum. It can cause sharp pain in the chest and rib area, which may be exacerbated by deep breathing, coughing, or physical activity.

3. Gastrointestinal Problems: Conditions such as acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can cause burning sensations in the chest and may radiate to the rib area. Gallbladder issues, such as gallstones, can also lead to pain in the upper abdomen that may be felt in the rib area.

4. Pulmonary Issues: Although less common, conditions affecting the lungs, such as pneumonia or pleuritis (inflammation of the lining of the lungs), can cause pain in the rib area, especially if there is associated coughing or difficulty breathing.

5. Cardiac Issues: While less likely given the specific location of your pain, it’s important to rule out any cardiac-related issues, especially if the pain is accompanied by other symptoms such as shortness of breath, sweating, or radiating pain to the arm or jaw.

When to Seek Medical Help
Given your symptoms of sharp pain and burning sensations, it is advisable to seek medical attention, especially if:
- The pain is severe or worsening.

- You experience additional symptoms such as shortness of breath, dizziness, or nausea.

- The pain persists for an extended period or is accompanied by fever.

Which Specialist to See
For your symptoms, you may consider starting with a visit to a primary care physician or a family doctor. They can perform an initial assessment, including a physical examination and possibly some diagnostic tests (like X-rays or blood tests) to determine the cause of your pain. Depending on their findings, they may refer you to a specialist, such as:
- Orthopedist: If a musculoskeletal issue is suspected.

- Gastroenterologist: If gastrointestinal problems are considered.

- Pulmonologist: If there are concerns regarding lung-related issues.

Conclusion
In summary, while lower rib pain can stem from various causes, it is essential to take your symptoms seriously, especially with the burning sensation you mentioned. Seeking medical advice will help you determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment. Remember, early intervention can often lead to better outcomes, so don’t hesitate to reach out to a healthcare provider.
