Left lower abdominal issues?
Doctor, I would like to ask you, as an athlete, I've recently noticed that when I practice at home and perform movements that involve lifting my legs or running, I hear a gurgling sound in my lower left abdomen.
What could be the issue? Could it be related to my recent bowel movements being a bit dark green?

Dr. Chen Shidian reply Gastroenterology and Hepatology
It may be the sound of gastrointestinal peristalsis; further observation is recommended.

Understanding the sounds and sensations in the left lower abdomen, especially when accompanied by changes in bowel habits, can be concerning. The "water sounds" you describe, often referred to as borborygmi, are typically associated with the movement of gas and fluid through the intestines. This phenomenon is common and can occur during physical activities, such as leg raises or running, due to increased abdominal pressure and movement of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.
Several factors could contribute to the sounds you are experiencing in your left lower abdomen. First, it's essential to recognize that the intestines are highly dynamic structures. They are constantly contracting and relaxing to facilitate digestion and the movement of contents through the digestive system. When you engage in physical activity, especially movements that involve bending or raising your legs, you may inadvertently stimulate your intestines, leading to increased peristalsis (the wave-like muscle contractions that move food through the digestive tract). This increased activity can result in audible sounds, which are generally normal and not a cause for concern.
Regarding the greenish color of your stool, this can be attributed to several factors. Green stools can occur due to the consumption of certain foods, particularly those high in chlorophyll, such as leafy greens, or foods with artificial coloring. Additionally, if food moves too quickly through the intestines, bile (which is green) may not have enough time to break down completely, resulting in greenish stools. If you have recently changed your diet or increased your intake of fiber, this could also explain the change in stool color.
However, if the green stool persists or is accompanied by other symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, or changes in appetite, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare professional. They may recommend further evaluation to rule out any underlying gastrointestinal issues, such as infections, malabsorption syndromes, or other conditions that could affect digestion.
In your case, since you are a physically active individual, it's also worth considering the impact of exercise on your digestive system. Intense physical activity can sometimes lead to gastrointestinal distress, which may manifest as changes in bowel habits or abdominal sounds. Ensuring proper hydration, maintaining a balanced diet, and allowing adequate recovery time between workouts can help mitigate these effects.
If the sounds in your left lower abdomen are accompanied by persistent pain, discomfort, or other concerning symptoms, it would be advisable to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider may perform a physical examination and, if necessary, order imaging studies or laboratory tests to assess for any underlying conditions, such as gastrointestinal obstruction, inflammation, or other abnormalities.
In summary, the sounds you are experiencing in your left lower abdomen during physical activity are likely related to normal gastrointestinal function and may not be a cause for concern. However, if you notice any significant changes in your bowel habits or experience additional symptoms, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet and regular exercise, can also support optimal digestive health.
