Contraindications for Nutritional Supplements During Breastfeeding

Hello, I am a new mother currently practicing breastfeeding along with formula feeding.
I would like to inquire about a supplement I consumed from last Friday until this morning, called CholaBB royal t.
Its main ingredients include B2, B6, B1, royal jelly tincture, taurine, niacinamide, and anhydrous caffeine.
The product description states that it is suitable for nutritional supplementation during pregnancy or breastfeeding, but after researching, I found that royal jelly may not be appropriate during lactation.
I have stopped taking it and would like to know if consuming it while breastfeeding could have any effects on my newborn.

Dr. Xiao Kaiwen reply Pediatrics

I believe that the amount of food components consumed by breastfeeding mothers that are secreted into breast milk is minimal.
Additionally, since you have stopped consuming it, I think it should not significantly affect the baby, so you don't need to worry too much.

As a new mom, it's completely understandable to have concerns about your diet and the nutritional supplements you are taking while breastfeeding. Your focus on ensuring the best for your newborn is commendable. Let's delve into the specifics of your question regarding the CholaBB royal t supplement and its ingredients, particularly the inclusion of royal jelly.

Royal jelly is a substance produced by honeybees and is often marketed for its health benefits. However, there are some considerations to keep in mind when it comes to breastfeeding. While royal jelly is generally considered safe for most adults, its effects on breastfeeding mothers and their infants are not well-studied. Some sources suggest that royal jelly may cause allergic reactions in some individuals, and there is a potential risk for infants, especially if there is a family history of allergies. Therefore, it is wise to avoid royal jelly during breastfeeding if you have any concerns about allergies.

Regarding the other ingredients in the supplement, such as B vitamins (B1, B2, B6), taurine, niacinamide, and anhydrous caffeine, these are generally considered safe in moderation. B vitamins are essential for energy metabolism and overall health, and they are important during breastfeeding to support both the mother and the infant. Taurine is an amino acid that is naturally found in breast milk and is important for the development of the infant's brain and eyes. Niacinamide (a form of vitamin B3) is also beneficial for skin health and metabolism.

However, caffeine intake should be monitored during breastfeeding. While moderate caffeine consumption (about 300 mg per day, equivalent to about 2-3 cups of coffee) is generally considered safe, excessive caffeine can lead to irritability and sleep disturbances in infants. Since your supplement contains anhydrous caffeine, it’s important to consider your total daily caffeine intake from all sources.

Since you have already stopped taking the supplement, you can feel reassured that any potential effects on your newborn would likely be minimal, especially if you have not taken it for an extended period. The body metabolizes substances relatively quickly, and breastfeeding mothers are encouraged to maintain a balanced diet rich in whole foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats, to support both their health and their baby's development.

In summary, while the ingredients in the CholaBB royal t supplement, aside from royal jelly, are generally safe, it is always best to consult with your healthcare provider or a registered dietitian before introducing any new supplements into your routine, especially during breastfeeding. They can provide personalized advice based on your health history and dietary needs.

To ensure a healthy breastfeeding experience, focus on a well-rounded diet, stay hydrated, and consider taking a prenatal vitamin if you haven't already. This will help you maintain your energy levels and provide the necessary nutrients for your baby. If you have any further questions or concerns, don't hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance. Your dedication to your health and your baby's well-being is the most important aspect of this journey.
