Itchy and painful inside the nose?

Hello, doctor.
Yesterday, I visited an ENT specialist due to itching and pain inside my nose, and the doctor prescribed a cream called Gentasone for me to apply.
Is it normal for my throat to have a medicinal taste after applying it? Did the medication accidentally get into my mouth? If it did accidentally get into my mouth, could it have any effects?

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology

Hello: Having a smell is usually a normal phenomenon and generally does not have any special impact.
However, if discomfort persists, you may consider stopping use or returning for an earlier check-up.
Wishing you peace and health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Cheng Jue-Yi, Director of the Department of Otolaryngology, Taoyuan Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

It is not uncommon to experience a taste of medication in your mouth after applying topical treatments like Gentasone Cream, especially if the medication is applied near the nasal passages or mouth. Gentasone Cream, which contains a combination of gentamicin (an antibiotic) and betamethasone (a corticosteroid), is typically used to treat skin conditions and can be absorbed through the skin or mucous membranes.
When you apply the cream inside your nose, it is possible for some of the medication to migrate to the throat or mouth due to the natural drainage of mucus or saliva. This can lead to a sensation of taste, which may be perceived as a "medicinal" flavor. While this experience can be disconcerting, it is generally not a cause for concern. The amount of medication that might inadvertently enter your mouth is usually minimal and unlikely to cause significant side effects.

However, if you are experiencing a persistent or unpleasant taste, or if you have any other symptoms such as irritation or discomfort in your throat, it would be wise to consult your healthcare provider. They may suggest adjusting the application technique or exploring alternative treatments if necessary.

In terms of safety, topical medications like Gentasone Cream are designed for external use, and while they can have systemic effects if absorbed in large quantities, the risk of serious side effects from a small amount accidentally ingested is low. Nonetheless, it is always best to avoid swallowing any topical medications intentionally or unintentionally. If you accidentally ingest a significant amount of the cream, you should contact a healthcare professional or poison control for advice.

To minimize the risk of tasting the medication in the future, consider the following tips:
1. Application Technique: Apply the cream carefully, ensuring that it is placed directly on the affected area and not too close to the nostrils or mouth.
2. Wash Hands: After applying the cream, wash your hands thoroughly to avoid transferring any residue to your mouth or face.

3. Avoid Eating or Drinking Immediately: Try to avoid eating or drinking for a short period after applying the cream to allow it to absorb properly and reduce the chance of taste transfer.

4. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any unusual symptoms that may arise after using the cream, and report them to your healthcare provider.

In conclusion, while tasting medication after applying Gentasone Cream can be a normal occurrence, it is important to monitor your symptoms and consult with your healthcare provider if you have any concerns. They can provide guidance tailored to your specific situation and ensure that you are using the medication safely and effectively.
