Gurgling sounds in the upper left abdomen?

Hello Doctor, I am 17 years old.
About a month ago, I went to see a gastroenterologist because I was experiencing persistent hiccups that I couldn't relieve, along with a feeling of abdominal bloating.
The doctor performed an ultrasound and X-ray to check for fecal accumulation, but he told me that my bowels were clear and there was no accumulation.
He mentioned that my intestines appeared healthy (though I wasn't clear on which part he was referring to).
Later, the doctor diagnosed me with a relaxed lower esophageal sphincter, which was causing the hiccup issues, along with mild irritable bowel syndrome.
After taking medication, I saw some improvement, but after stopping the medication, I have been trying to lose weight, so I haven't been eating as much between meals as I used to.
Recently, when I lie down, I often hear loud gurgling sounds, though it's not constant.
I also feel a sensation of movement inside, but it feels constricted.
Sometimes, I feel gurgling sensations around my anus, or I have a sensation of something stuck from my chest to my throat, wanting to burp but unable to.
My food intake isn't excessive, yet I still feel a bit bloated (not sure if it's related to my weight loss).
I have a bowel movement about once a day, but the stools from yesterday and the day before were a bit drier.
Recently, my stools have been a darker brown rather than the typical light brown (though there are still some that appear lighter), but they do seem to have some darker bits mixed in.
I would like to ask if this is normal.
Is it necessary to have stools that are light yellow or golden to be considered normal? Also, are the symptoms I described indicative of a serious condition? Thank you, Doctor.

Hello: The color of stool can vary in depth and is related to the types of food consumed and the amount of water intake; it does not always have to be golden yellow, so there is no need to worry excessively.
It is recommended to lose weight while also paying attention to a balanced diet.
As long as you control your portion sizes and engage in moderate exercise, you can manage your weight healthily.

Understanding the gurgling sounds in the upper left abdomen, especially in a 17-year-old, can be quite concerning, particularly when accompanied by symptoms like bloating, hiccups, and changes in bowel habits. Based on your description, it seems that you have already undergone some diagnostic tests, including ultrasound and X-rays, which have ruled out significant issues like fecal impaction and indicated that your intestines are healthy.

The gurgling sounds you are experiencing, medically referred to as "borborygmi," are often a normal phenomenon associated with the movement of gas and fluids through the intestines. This can be more pronounced when you are lying down, as gravity affects the movement of gas and contents within the gastrointestinal tract. The sensation of your intestines wanting to "move" or the feeling of pressure can also be attributed to normal peristalsis, which is the wave-like muscle contractions that move food through the digestive tract.

Your previous diagnosis of a relaxed lower esophageal sphincter (often referred to as "lower esophageal sphincter laxity") can lead to symptoms such as persistent hiccups and gastroesophageal reflux, which may contribute to the discomfort you feel in your chest and throat. This condition can also cause a sensation of fullness or bloating, especially after meals, which might explain why you feel bloated even after consuming a small amount of food.

Regarding your bowel movements, it is important to note that stool color can vary based on diet, hydration, and other factors. While a typical stool color ranges from light brown to dark brown, the presence of darker stools can sometimes indicate the consumption of certain foods or supplements, or it may suggest bleeding in the upper gastrointestinal tract. However, if your stools are consistently dark and you notice other symptoms such as abdominal pain, fatigue, or changes in appetite, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation.

As for the frequency of your bowel movements, having a bowel movement once a day is generally considered normal. However, if you notice that your stools are consistently hard or dry, it may indicate mild constipation, which can be influenced by dietary changes, such as reducing food intake while dieting. Ensuring adequate hydration and incorporating fiber-rich foods into your diet can help maintain regular bowel movements and improve stool consistency.

In summary, while the gurgling sounds and sensations you are experiencing may be concerning, they are often benign and related to normal digestive processes. However, if you continue to experience discomfort, changes in bowel habits, or if your symptoms worsen, it is essential to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may recommend further investigations or adjustments to your diet and lifestyle to alleviate your symptoms. Remember, maintaining a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and managing stress can significantly impact your gastrointestinal health.
