According to current medical technology, is it possible to reopen and regenerate growth plates?

Hello doctor, I am currently 33 years old, 170 cm tall (male), and I would like to grow to 178 cm.
Is there any medical technology available that can reopen the growth plates? Or are there any other methods (excluding surgery) to increase height? I regularly jump rope and drink milk every week.
Thank you for your help!

Dr. Shi Guozheng reply Orthopedics

The unlikely procedure of bone lengthening surgery can slightly increase the length of bones.

As a 33-year-old male, your concern about increasing your height from 170 cm to 178 cm is understandable, especially given societal pressures and personal aspirations regarding height. However, it is important to clarify the biological and medical realities surrounding growth plates and height increase at your age.

Firstly, growth plates, also known as epiphyseal plates, are areas of developing cartilage tissue located at the ends of long bones. In children and adolescents, these plates are responsible for bone growth. Once an individual reaches adulthood, typically around the late teens to early twenties, these growth plates close and harden into solid bone. This process is influenced by various factors, including genetics, hormones, and nutrition. By the age of 33, it is highly likely that your growth plates have already fused, making it biologically impossible to reopen them for further height increase.

Current medical technology does not offer a method to reopen growth plates in adults. While there are surgical procedures such as limb lengthening (also known as distraction osteogenesis), these are complex, invasive, and carry significant risks and complications. Limb lengthening involves cutting the bone and gradually pulling it apart to allow new bone to form in the gap. This procedure is typically reserved for individuals with specific medical conditions or severe limb discrepancies and is not commonly performed for cosmetic height increase due to the associated risks, including infection, nerve damage, and prolonged recovery time.

In terms of non-surgical methods, while maintaining a healthy lifestyle through regular exercise and a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D can support overall bone health, they will not result in significant height increase for someone whose growth plates have closed. Activities like jumping rope or playing basketball can improve posture and strengthen muscles, which may help you appear taller, but they will not physically increase your height.

It is also worth noting that height is largely determined by genetics, with studies suggesting that approximately 90% of a person's height is influenced by hereditary factors. Environmental factors, including nutrition and physical activity during the growing years, can play a role, but they have limited impact once growth plates have fused.

In conclusion, while your desire to increase your height is understandable, the current medical consensus is that there are no viable options for height increase in adults once growth plates have closed. It may be beneficial to focus on aspects of self-acceptance and confidence that do not revolve around height. Engaging in activities that boost your self-esteem and surrounding yourself with supportive individuals can be more fulfilling than pursuing height increase. If you have further concerns about your health or body image, consider speaking with a healthcare professional or a counselor who can provide guidance and support.
