Epiphyseal plate closure
Hello, doctor.
Some time ago, I had an X-ray taken of my right knee at the hospital to check the growth plate, and the doctor indicated that it has already closed (a single line).
I would like to ask if there is still a way to increase my height by 3 to 5 centimeters through a balanced diet, sufficient sleep, and appropriate stimulation (such as jumping rope and running).
My current height is approximately 172 centimeters, and I hope to reach over 175 centimeters...
I would like to grow through normal methods.
Thank you, doctor.

Theoretically, once the growth plates close, an individual will not grow taller regardless of any methods used.
Typically, the growth plates close after puberty, with boys around the ages of 15 to 16 and girls around 14 to 15.

More Info
Once the growth plates have closed, which typically occurs in late adolescence, it is generally accepted in the medical community that further height increase is not possible through any means, including diet, exercise, or sleep. The growth plates, also known as epiphyseal plates, are areas of developing cartilage tissue located at the ends of long bones. Once these plates close, they are replaced by solid bone, marking the end of vertical growth.
In your case, since your growth plates have already closed, any attempts to increase height through balanced diet, exercise, or sleep will not yield the desired results. However, it is essential to understand the role of nutrition and physical activity in overall health and well-being, even if they do not contribute to height increase.
Nutrition
A balanced diet is crucial for maintaining overall health. While it won't increase your height post-growth plate closure, it can help you achieve optimal body composition and health. Focus on:
1. Calcium and Vitamin D: These nutrients are vital for bone health. Dairy products, leafy greens, and fortified foods are excellent sources of calcium. Vitamin D can be obtained from sunlight exposure and foods like fatty fish, egg yolks, and fortified products.
2. Protein: Essential for muscle repair and growth, protein can be found in lean meats, fish, eggs, dairy, legumes, and nuts. Adequate protein intake supports overall body function and can help maintain a healthy weight.
3. Fruits and Vegetables: These provide essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that support overall health. Aim for a variety of colors to ensure a wide range of nutrients.
4. Hydration: Staying well-hydrated is crucial for overall health. Water is essential for every cell in your body, including those involved in muscle function and recovery.
Exercise
While exercise won't increase your height after growth plate closure, it can improve your posture, muscle tone, and overall body composition, which may help you appear taller. Consider incorporating:
1. Strength Training: Building muscle can improve your posture and body composition. Exercises like squats, lunges, and deadlifts can strengthen your legs and core.
2. Cardiovascular Exercise: Activities like running, cycling, or swimming can improve your cardiovascular health and help maintain a healthy weight.
3. Flexibility and Posture Exercises: Yoga and Pilates can enhance flexibility and promote better posture, which can make you appear taller.
Sleep
Adequate sleep is essential for overall health and well-being. During sleep, the body undergoes repair and recovery processes. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night to support your physical and mental health.
Conclusion
In summary, while a balanced diet, regular exercise, and sufficient sleep are vital for maintaining health and well-being, they will not increase height once the growth plates have closed. Instead, focus on these aspects to enhance your overall health, improve your posture, and feel more confident in your body. If you have concerns about your height or health, consider consulting a healthcare professional for personalized advice and guidance.
