Ankle ligaments
Hello, my ankle ligament injury has been ongoing for a week (the doctor said the ligament is not torn), but it is still swollen.
The bruise has changed from purple to a yellow-green color, but the area has slightly expanded, and I am unable to stand.
Is this recovery progress normal? Also, the orthopedic doctor I saw said it's fine to wear a brace while walking, but I currently can't walk at all.
Do I still need to wear the brace? If so, how tight should I secure it? Lastly, would seeing a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner for topical treatments or going to physical therapy help with the healing of the ligament? Thank you.

Wearing protective gear can help with ligament healing, reduce ligament load, and prevent re-injury.
Both Western and traditional rehabilitation therapies can promote circulation, which is beneficial for healing.
The tightness of the protective gear should be sufficient to limit ankle joint movement without being so tight that it causes ischemia or leads to swelling in the foot.

More Info
Hello! It sounds like you are dealing with a challenging ankle ligament injury, and I understand your concerns regarding recovery and treatment options. Let’s break down your questions and provide some insights based on medical knowledge.
Recovery Progress
Firstly, the recovery progress you are experiencing—persistent swelling and bruising that has changed color—is quite common after an ankle ligament injury. The transition from purple to yellow-green indicates that your body is healing, as bruising typically follows this color change during the healing process. However, the fact that the swelling persists and you are unable to stand is something to monitor closely. It is essential to give your body time to heal, but if the swelling does not improve or worsens, it may be worth revisiting your healthcare provider for further evaluation.
Use of Ankle Brace
Regarding the use of an ankle brace, even if you are currently unable to walk, wearing a brace can provide stability and support to the injured area. It helps to prevent further injury and can alleviate pain during the healing process. When wearing a brace, it should be snug but not overly tight—tight enough to provide support without cutting off circulation. If you experience numbness or increased pain while wearing the brace, it may be too tight, and you should adjust it accordingly.
Rehabilitation Options
As for seeking alternative treatments like traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) or physical therapy, both can be beneficial in the recovery process. TCM, including the use of medicated plasters, may help reduce swelling and promote healing through herbal ingredients. However, it is crucial to consult with a qualified practitioner who can tailor the treatment to your specific condition.
Physical therapy is also highly recommended for ligament injuries. A physical therapist can guide you through exercises that promote range of motion, strength, and stability in the ankle. They can also provide modalities such as ultrasound or electrical stimulation to help reduce swelling and pain. Early rehabilitation can significantly enhance recovery outcomes and help you regain function more quickly.
General Recommendations
1. R.I.C.E. Method: Continue to follow the R.I.C.E. method—Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. This approach helps manage swelling and pain.
2. Gradual Weight-Bearing: As your pain decreases, gradually start to put weight on your ankle as tolerated. This should be done under the guidance of your healthcare provider or physical therapist.
3. Follow-Up: Keep regular follow-up appointments with your orthopedic doctor to monitor the healing process and adjust your treatment plan as necessary.
4. Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to your body’s signals. If you experience increased pain or swelling, it may indicate that you need to modify your activity level or seek further medical advice.
Conclusion
In summary, while your recovery progress seems typical for an ankle ligament injury, it is essential to continue monitoring your symptoms and follow your healthcare provider's advice. Wearing a brace can provide necessary support, and incorporating physical therapy or TCM may enhance your recovery. Always consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new treatment to ensure it aligns with your specific needs. Wishing you a smooth and speedy recovery!
