Side effects of Boska?
Hello doctor, I have recently started using Finasteride for hair loss, taking 1/4 of a pill daily for three months.
However, since I started using it, I have experienced a loss of morning erections and need to manually stimulate my genital area to achieve an erection while watching adult films.
I would like to know if there is a way to resolve this issue, or if I must discontinue the medication to improve the situation.

Dr. Wu Yuxin reply Dermatology
Stop the medication for a while to see if there is any improvement in the condition.

Finasteride, commonly known by its brand name Proscar or Propecia, is a medication primarily used to treat male pattern baldness and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It works by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that contributes to hair loss in genetically predisposed men. While many patients experience positive results in terms of hair regrowth or stabilization of hair loss, some may encounter side effects, including sexual dysfunction.
In your case, the disappearance of morning erections and the need for manual stimulation to achieve an erection are concerning symptoms that can be associated with the use of finasteride. Sexual side effects, although not experienced by everyone, can include decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and ejaculation disorders. These side effects are thought to be related to the reduction of DHT levels, which play a role in sexual function.
If you are experiencing these symptoms, it is essential to consider the following:
1. Duration of Symptoms: Since you have been on finasteride for three months, it is possible that your body is still adjusting to the hormonal changes induced by the medication. Some patients report that sexual side effects diminish over time as their bodies adapt.
2. Consultation with a Healthcare Provider: It is crucial to discuss your symptoms with your prescribing physician. They can evaluate whether the side effects you are experiencing are indeed related to finasteride or if there may be other underlying causes. Your doctor may suggest adjusting the dosage or switching to an alternative treatment for hair loss if the side effects are bothersome.
3. Potential for Reversal: In many cases, sexual side effects from finasteride can improve after discontinuation of the medication. However, some studies suggest that a small percentage of men may experience persistent sexual side effects even after stopping the drug, a condition sometimes referred to as post-finasteride syndrome. This is still a subject of ongoing research and debate within the medical community.
4. Alternative Treatments: If you decide to stop taking finasteride, there are other options for managing hair loss, such as minoxidil (Rogaine), which is a topical treatment that can promote hair regrowth without the hormonal side effects associated with finasteride. Additionally, lifestyle changes, such as a balanced diet, regular exercise, and stress management, can also support hair health.
5. Psychological Factors: Sometimes, anxiety or stress about sexual performance can exacerbate erectile dysfunction. It may be beneficial to address any psychological factors contributing to your symptoms, possibly through counseling or therapy.
In summary, while finasteride can be effective for hair loss, it is essential to monitor and address any side effects, particularly those related to sexual function. Open communication with your healthcare provider is vital to finding a solution that works for you, whether that involves adjusting your medication, exploring alternatives, or addressing any psychological factors at play. Always prioritize your overall well-being and quality of life when making decisions about your treatment.
