Skin bleeding from steroid application, with dried blood marks noticed upon waking up?

I have seborrheic dermatitis.
After seeing a doctor, I applied a corticosteroid for two days (once a day), and the area on my cheeks has improved, but my nose is still very red, so I only applied it to my nose.
When I woke up, I noticed dried blood spots on my nose, each about 1.5 x 1.5 mm, with 5 to 6 clustered together.
It seems like there was bleeding from the pores.
I would like to know why there is bleeding and whether I should continue applying the corticosteroid (the bleeding areas are still red).

When using topical steroid creams, such as the one you mentioned for seborrheic dermatitis, it's important to be aware of potential side effects, including skin thinning, irritation, and in some cases, localized bleeding. The symptoms you're experiencing, particularly the small areas of dried blood on your nose, could be attributed to a few factors related to the use of the steroid cream.

Topical steroids work by reducing inflammation and suppressing the immune response in the skin. While they can be very effective in treating conditions like seborrheic dermatitis, they can also lead to skin thinning (atrophy) over time, especially with prolonged use or if used on sensitive areas like the face. This thinning can make the skin more susceptible to injury and bleeding, particularly if the skin is already irritated or inflamed.

The redness you see on your nose may indicate ongoing inflammation, which could be exacerbated by the steroid cream if used improperly. It's crucial to apply the cream as directed by your healthcare provider, typically in a thin layer, and to avoid overuse. If you're applying the cream too liberally or too frequently, it could lead to increased irritation and the symptoms you're experiencing.

In your case, since you've noticed bleeding, it's advisable to take a cautious approach. Here are some steps you can consider:
1. Discontinue Use Temporarily: Given the bleeding and irritation, it may be wise to stop using the steroid cream on the affected area for a few days. This will allow your skin to recover and reduce the risk of further irritation.

2. Moisturize: After discontinuing the steroid, apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to the area. This can help soothe the skin and promote healing. Look for products that are specifically designed for sensitive skin.

3. Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on the affected area. If the redness and irritation persist or worsen, or if you notice any signs of infection (such as increased redness, swelling, or pus), you should consult your healthcare provider.

4. Consult Your Doctor: It's essential to communicate with your healthcare provider about the bleeding and any other symptoms you're experiencing. They may recommend an alternative treatment plan or a different type of medication that is less likely to cause side effects.

5. Consider a Lower Potency Steroid: If your doctor deems it necessary to continue using a steroid, they may suggest switching to a lower-potency steroid or a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory treatment that can help manage your symptoms without the same risk of side effects.

6. Avoid Irritants: Be mindful of other products you may be using on your face, such as exfoliants or harsh cleansers, which can further irritate the skin.

In summary, while topical steroids can be effective for treating seborrheic dermatitis, they must be used carefully to avoid side effects like skin thinning and bleeding. If you experience any concerning symptoms, it's always best to consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice and treatment options.
