Can children aged 1.5 to 3 years old really strengthen their immune system by consuming propolis?

Hello, doctor: The pharmacy nutrition consultants often recommend purchasing propolis to enhance children's immunity.
I have two children, one is 1.5 years old and the other is 2.5 years old.
I would like to know if consuming propolis can indeed strengthen children's immunity and reduce the likelihood of allergies.
Thank you!

BONNIE, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2003/08/07

Dr. Liang Hongjian reply Pediatrics

According to the National Health Promotion Administration of the Republic of China, propolis is a resin-like protective layer produced by plants when they sprout, which helps prevent damage from microorganisms and pests.
Bees collect this substance, mix it with their saliva, and apply it to the gaps in the hive to protect against external threats and inhibit decay within the hive.
It is noted to have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties, among others.
Additionally, Professor Lin Song-Chou from Taipei Medical University states that propolis consists of 50% resin, 30% beeswax, and 20% pollen, along with approximately 5% trace components, including vitamins, minerals, and organic compounds.
One type of flavonoid, known as pinocembrin, is reported to have certain therapeutic effects.
Professor Lin has conducted animal experiments on hepatitis and anti-aging, with positive results.
However, there have been no human trials or accurate statistics presented in the medical community, and thus, propolis has not yet been used for disease treatment.

Propolis, a resinous substance produced by bees, has gained popularity as a natural supplement purported to enhance immunity and reduce allergic reactions. However, when considering its use for toddlers aged 1.5 to 3 years, it is essential to approach the topic with caution and an understanding of the current scientific evidence.

Propolis is known for its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. It is composed of approximately 50% resin, 30% beeswax, and 20% pollen, along with various vitamins, minerals, and flavonoids. These components contribute to its potential health benefits, including the ability to inhibit the growth of certain bacteria and viruses, which could theoretically support immune function.

However, while some studies suggest that propolis may have beneficial effects on immune health, there is a lack of robust clinical trials specifically involving young children. Most of the existing research has been conducted on adults or animal models, and the results cannot be directly extrapolated to toddlers. The immune system of young children is still developing, and their nutritional needs are quite specific. Therefore, introducing supplements like propolis should be done with caution.

For toddlers, the primary focus should be on providing a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients that support immune health. This includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Nutrients such as vitamins A, C, D, and E, along with minerals like zinc and iron, play crucial roles in maintaining a robust immune system. Breastfeeding, if applicable, can also provide essential antibodies and nutrients that help bolster a child's immunity.

In terms of allergies, while some anecdotal evidence suggests that propolis may help reduce allergic reactions, scientific evidence is limited. Allergies in young children can be complex, and introducing new substances into their diet can sometimes lead to adverse reactions. It is crucial to monitor for any signs of allergies or sensitivities when introducing new supplements or foods.

Before considering propolis or any other supplement for your toddlers, it is advisable to consult with a pediatrician or a qualified healthcare professional. They can provide personalized recommendations based on your children's health status, dietary habits, and any specific concerns you may have. Additionally, they can help you determine if there are any underlying health issues that need to be addressed, such as frequent infections or allergies.

In summary, while propolis may have potential health benefits, its use in toddlers should be approached with caution due to the lack of specific research in this age group. A well-rounded diet, proper hygiene practices, and regular pediatric check-ups are the most effective ways to support your children's immune health. Always prioritize professional medical advice when considering supplements for young children to ensure their safety and well-being.
