Post-Operative Concerns After Circumcision Surgery - Urology

Circumcision surgery

I underwent a circumcision on April 30, and I experienced a hematoma post-surgery.
I had follow-up appointments within a week, and the doctor advised that I no longer need to dress the wound, just to apply iodine twice a day.
However, starting on May 11, I noticed some dark red discharge from the wound, and there was some bleeding on May 12 and May 13.
Is this a normal occurrence following a hematoma? I'm really worried! (I can't go out to see a doctor because I'm in quarantine).
My doctor mentioned that the hematoma will absorb on its own, and I should take antibiotics and apply povidone-iodine twice daily.

Hello: If there is a large hematoma, it is possible.
Currently, keep the wound clean.
Generally, small hematomas will absorb on their own.
Wishing you good health.

After undergoing circumcision surgery, it's not uncommon to experience some post-operative concerns, including the formation of a hematoma and minor bleeding. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing a few typical post-surgical symptoms, but let's break down your concerns and provide some clarity.

1. Understanding Hematoma Formation: A hematoma occurs when blood collects outside of blood vessels, often due to the surgical procedure. This can happen if there is minor bleeding during or after the surgery. Your doctor has indicated that the hematoma will absorb on its own, which is generally the case. The body has a natural process for resolving hematomas, and they can take time to fully dissipate.
2. Bleeding Concerns: The dark red bleeding you are observing could be a result of the hematoma breaking down and the blood being reabsorbed into the body. However, if the bleeding is persistent or increasing in volume, it could indicate that there is still some active bleeding or that the hematoma is larger than initially assessed. It’s important to monitor the amount and frequency of the bleeding. If it becomes heavy or is accompanied by other symptoms such as increased pain, swelling, or fever, it would be advisable to seek medical attention, even if you are in isolation.

3. Post-Operative Care: Following your doctor's instructions is crucial. Applying iodine as directed helps to prevent infection, which is a significant concern after any surgical procedure. Continuing to take antibiotics as prescribed is also important to prevent any potential infections that could arise from the surgical site.

4. When to Seek Help: If you notice any of the following, you should seek medical advice:
- Increased bleeding that soaks through your dressings.

- Signs of infection, such as increased redness, warmth, swelling, or pus at the surgical site.

- Severe pain that is not relieved by over-the-counter pain medications.

- Fever or chills.

5. Emotional Well-Being: It's understandable to feel anxious about your recovery, especially when you are unable to consult your doctor in person. Consider reaching out to your healthcare provider via telemedicine if possible, as they may be able to provide reassurance and guidance based on your symptoms.

6. Recovery Timeline: Generally, the recovery from circumcision surgery can take a few weeks. Most patients experience a gradual decrease in discomfort and any swelling or bruising should improve over time. However, everyone's healing process is different, and factors such as your overall health, adherence to post-operative care, and the extent of the surgery can influence recovery time.

In summary, while some bleeding and the presence of a hematoma can be normal after circumcision surgery, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If you have any doubts or if your symptoms worsen, do not hesitate to seek medical advice, even if it means using telehealth options. Your health and peace of mind are paramount, and staying informed about your recovery can help alleviate some of the anxiety you may be feeling.
