Weight loss
Hello doctor, I previously inquired about my stomach discomfort.
Last night around midnight, while lying in bed, I suddenly felt a hollow, hungry pain in the area under my left rib, which is about where the stomach is located.
I also felt some discomfort on both sides of my lower abdomen.
After waking up, the pain was gone, but I noticed that my weight has decreased: on June 12, I weighed 62.7 kg; on June 13, 62 kg; and on June 14, 61.7 kg.
Due to my stomach discomfort, I haven't been eating cookies or sweets after meals.
I have been eating three meals a day, trying to keep my diet light, avoiding spicy and fried foods.
For breakfast, I had a steamed bun with strawberry jam; for lunch and dinner, I had half a bowl of rice topped with vegetables (on the first day, I had loofah and sweet potato leaves; on the second day, I had water spinach and steamed eggplant).
The vegetable portions were about one tablespoon, along with two small pieces of meat or one tablespoon of steamed egg.
I have also been drinking more water.
Is this weight loss normal? Additionally, I would like to ask how many cups of yogurt I can drink in a day after taking stomach medication.
Yesterday, I had difficulty using the restroom and could only pass gas.
I want to drink some yogurt to improve this; is that okay? Are there other methods that might be more suitable for aiding bowel movements? Is it appropriate to eat bitter melon, sweet potato leaves, water spinach, and eggplant? Would eating bamboo shoots help with bowel movements? Thank you, doctor.

All suggestions are acceptable; please also pay attention to weight changes.
Additionally, taking a walk after meals can help with peristalsis and bowel movements.

Hello! Thank you for your detailed inquiry regarding weight loss and digestive health. It’s great to see that you are actively seeking ways to improve your health and manage your weight. Let’s break down your concerns and provide some insights.
Weight Loss and Digestive Health
From your description, it seems you have made some positive dietary changes, such as reducing your intake of sweets and fried foods, and focusing on lighter meals. This is a commendable approach, as a balanced diet is crucial for both weight management and digestive health.
1. Weight Loss: The weight loss you’ve experienced over the past few days (from 62.7 kg to 61.7 kg) can be considered normal, especially if it is a result of dietary changes and possibly a reduction in caloric intake. Weight fluctuations can occur due to various factors, including water retention, food intake, and even hormonal changes. It’s important to remember that sustainable weight loss typically occurs at a rate of about 0.5 to 1 kg per week. Rapid weight loss can sometimes lead to muscle loss or nutritional deficiencies, so it’s essential to ensure that your diet remains balanced and nutritious.
2. Digestive Health: Your symptoms of discomfort and changes in bowel movements could be related to your dietary changes or possibly stress. It’s good that you are eating a variety of vegetables like bitter melon, sweet potato leaves, and eggplant, as these are generally high in fiber, which can aid digestion. Fiber is essential for maintaining regular bowel movements and overall digestive health.
- Probiotics: Drinking yogurt (like your mention of yogurt) can be beneficial for gut health due to its probiotic content. Probiotics help maintain a healthy balance of gut bacteria, which can improve digestion and may help with constipation. Generally, consuming 1-2 cups of yogurt per day is safe and can be beneficial, but it's best to listen to your body and adjust based on how you feel.
- Hydration: Staying well-hydrated is also crucial for digestive health. Water helps to soften stool and promotes regular bowel movements. Aim for at least 8 glasses of water a day, but this can vary based on individual needs.
3. Foods for Digestion: The foods you mentioned—bitter melon, sweet potato leaves, and eggplant—are all excellent choices for digestive health. They are high in fiber and can help promote regularity. Bamboo shoots can also be beneficial as they are low in calories and high in fiber, which can aid in digestion.
4. Constipation Relief: If you are experiencing constipation, consider incorporating more high-fiber foods such as whole grains, fruits (like apples and pears), and legumes (like beans and lentils) into your diet. Additionally, physical activity can stimulate digestion and help alleviate constipation.
5. Consultation: Since you mentioned discomfort and changes in your digestive health, it may be wise to consult with a healthcare provider or a registered dietitian. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific health needs and help you create a balanced meal plan that supports both weight loss and digestive health.
Conclusion
In summary, your approach to weight loss through dietary adjustments is on the right track. Focus on maintaining a balanced diet rich in fiber, staying hydrated, and incorporating regular physical activity. Monitor your body’s responses to these changes, and don’t hesitate to seek professional guidance if you have ongoing concerns about your digestive health or weight management. Remember, the goal is to achieve a healthy lifestyle that you can maintain in the long term. Best of luck on your journey to better health!
