Rehabilitation therapy
Hello Doctor: I had a reconstruction of my anterior cruciate ligament in April and am currently undergoing rehabilitation.
However, the hospital only schedules treatment for two days a week.
Can I seek additional treatment at another clinic during the other times? I would like to be proactive in my recovery, for example, attending A Hospital on Mondays and Wednesdays, and then going to another clinic, B Clinic, for treatment on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays? Thank you, Doctor.

After undergoing ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) reconstruction surgery, it is quite common for patients to seek rehabilitation to regain strength, stability, and range of motion in the knee. Your question about combining rehabilitation treatments at different clinics is a valid one and reflects a proactive approach to your recovery.
In general, it is permissible to attend rehabilitation sessions at different clinics, provided that the treatments are complementary and do not conflict with each other. Many patients choose to do this to maximize their rehabilitation efforts, especially if one clinic has limited availability or specific expertise that the other does not. Here are some important considerations to keep in mind:
1. Communication with Therapists: It is crucial to inform both rehabilitation clinics about your treatment plans. This ensures that all therapists are aware of your rehabilitation protocol and can coordinate their efforts. Clear communication helps prevent any overlapping treatments that could lead to overexertion or conflicting rehabilitation strategies.
2. Consistency in Treatment: While it is beneficial to have multiple rehabilitation sessions, consistency in your treatment plan is essential. Each clinic may have its own approach and techniques, so it’s important to ensure that the exercises and therapies you receive are aligned with your overall rehabilitation goals. Discuss your treatment plan with both clinics to ensure that they complement each other.
3. Monitoring Progress: Regularly monitor your progress and any changes in your knee's condition. If you experience increased pain or discomfort, it may be necessary to adjust your rehabilitation schedule. Both clinics should be kept informed about your progress, as this can influence the type of therapy you receive.
4. Avoiding Overtraining: While it is commendable to be proactive about your recovery, be cautious about overtraining. Your body needs time to heal, and excessive rehabilitation sessions without adequate rest can lead to fatigue or injury. Pay attention to your body’s signals and ensure you have sufficient recovery time between sessions.
5. Consulting Your Surgeon or Primary Therapist: Before proceeding with treatments at multiple clinics, it is advisable to consult with your orthopedic surgeon or primary physical therapist. They can provide guidance on whether this approach is suitable for your specific case and may even recommend certain clinics or therapists based on their experience.
6. Types of Rehabilitation: Different clinics may offer various types of rehabilitation techniques, such as manual therapy, strength training, balance exercises, and functional training. Combining these approaches can be beneficial, as long as they are tailored to your recovery stage and goals.
7. Insurance Considerations: Check with your insurance provider regarding coverage for treatments at multiple clinics. Some insurance plans may have specific rules about how many sessions you can attend or may require referrals for certain types of therapy.
In conclusion, combining rehabilitation treatments at different clinics after ACL surgery can be a beneficial strategy for your recovery, as long as it is done thoughtfully and with proper communication among your healthcare providers. Always prioritize your health and recovery, and do not hesitate to seek advice from your medical team to ensure that your rehabilitation plan is safe and effective.
