Urine sometimes becomes cloudy?
Hello, doctor.
I have nephrotic syndrome and have been under continuous monitoring, which has been normal.
Recently, I underwent an MRI, which detected cysts in both my liver and kidneys.
The doctor mentioned that we will continue to monitor, and my blood test values are all within normal ranges.
Sometimes, I notice that my first urine of the night is a bit cloudy, although it’s not dark yellow, but the second urine is normal in color and not cloudy.
1.
Could this indicate a problem with my kidneys or liver? If it’s not persistent, is it a concern?
2.
I am currently taking lutein and fish oil (which contains soy).
Is it safe to supplement these with nephrotic syndrome? Could it lead to an overdose, or worsen my kidney condition?

Dr. Lin Wuxuan reply Internal Medicine
Hello, regarding urine color, it is advisable to monitor it.
Chronic patients are not recommended to take dietary supplements on their own; it is best to consult a physician to assess their condition and the suitability of the ingredients to avoid excessive intake that may burden the body.
Thank you.

When it comes to understanding temporary cloudy urine, especially in the context of existing kidney conditions such as nephrotic syndrome, it is essential to consider various factors that could contribute to this symptom. Cloudy urine can result from several causes, including the presence of protein, white blood cells, or other substances that may indicate an underlying issue with the kidneys or urinary tract.
1. Temporary Cloudy Urine: The fact that your first urine of the night is cloudy while subsequent urinations appear normal may not necessarily indicate a serious problem. Temporary cloudiness can occur due to several benign reasons, such as dehydration, concentration of urine overnight, or even dietary factors. If the cloudiness is not persistent and resolves with subsequent urinations, it may not be a cause for concern. However, if you notice other symptoms such as pain, burning during urination, or changes in frequency, it would be prudent to consult your healthcare provider.
2. Kidney and Liver Health: Given your history of nephrotic syndrome and the recent MRI findings indicating cysts in both the liver and kidneys, it is essential to maintain regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider. While the presence of cysts can be common and often benign, monitoring is crucial to ensure that they do not lead to complications. The fact that your blood tests are within normal ranges is reassuring, but continued observation is necessary to catch any changes early.
3. Dietary Supplements: Regarding your question about taking lutein and fish oil, these supplements are generally considered safe for individuals with nephrotic syndrome when taken in moderation. However, it is essential to consult with your nephrologist or healthcare provider before adding or continuing any supplements. They can provide personalized advice based on your overall health, kidney function, and any other medications you may be taking. Overconsumption of certain supplements can lead to complications, especially in individuals with kidney disease, so it is crucial to adhere to recommended dosages.
4. Monitoring and Follow-Up: Since you have a history of kidney disease, it is vital to keep a close watch on any changes in your symptoms or urine characteristics. Regular check-ups, including urine tests and blood work, will help your healthcare provider assess your kidney function and overall health. If you notice any persistent changes in your urine, such as ongoing cloudiness, changes in color, or any discomfort, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation.
5. Lifestyle Considerations: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can significantly impact kidney health. Staying well-hydrated, following a balanced diet low in sodium and protein (as recommended by your healthcare provider), and avoiding excessive intake of supplements without medical advice are all important steps. Regular exercise and managing any underlying conditions, such as diabetes or hypertension, are also crucial for preserving kidney function.
In summary, while occasional cloudy urine may not be a cause for alarm, it is essential to remain vigilant, especially with your existing kidney condition. Regular monitoring, open communication with your healthcare provider, and a cautious approach to dietary supplements will help you manage your health effectively. Always prioritize professional medical advice tailored to your specific health needs.
