Post-Sinus Surgery Nasal Congestion and Dizziness - Otolaryngology

Sinusitis & Dizziness

I previously underwent sinus surgery at your hospital, but it seems that my nasal congestion issue still persists.
Every time I catch a cold, the first symptom I experience is nasal congestion, and recently, it has been accompanied by nosebleeds whenever I have congestion.
Is it possible that even after surgery, I am still unable to resolve my nasal congestion problem? Additionally, I have been experiencing dizziness frequently.
Normally, I feel fine, but occasionally, I feel as if I just had a car accident, with a sensation of my head being hit, and I also feel nauseous.
However, the next day, I feel fine again.
I'm unsure whether I should see a doctor, as I really don't understand the severity of my symptoms.

Dr. Cai Zhenggu reply Otolaryngology

Hello Chen: Sinus surgery is intended to address the issue of yellow nasal discharge, but it does not resolve nasal congestion.
You may have other nasal conditions contributing to your congestion, so I recommend that you come to my clinic for an examination.
After I assess your condition, I can provide you with more detailed answers.
Dizziness is caused by an imbalance in the inner ear nerves, and it is necessary to conduct hearing tests and dizziness assessments.
Additionally, medication is required to manage the condition, as it can worsen if left untreated.

Post-sinus surgery complications, such as nasal congestion and dizziness, can be concerning for patients who have undergone procedures to alleviate sinus issues. It is not uncommon for individuals to experience persistent nasal congestion even after surgery, particularly if they have a history of sinusitis or other nasal conditions.
Nasal congestion can be attributed to several factors. After sinus surgery, the nasal passages may still be healing, and inflammation can persist. This inflammation can lead to swelling of the nasal tissues, which may cause a sensation of blockage or congestion. Additionally, if you are prone to allergies or have a history of respiratory infections, these can exacerbate nasal congestion, especially during cold seasons or when exposed to allergens. The presence of blood in your nasal discharge, particularly after surgery, can be alarming. It is essential to monitor the amount and frequency of bleeding. While some bleeding can be expected post-surgery, persistent or heavy bleeding should be evaluated by your healthcare provider.

Regarding the dizziness you mentioned, it is crucial to consider several potential causes. Dizziness can arise from various factors, including inner ear issues, sinus pressure, or even anxiety. The inner ear plays a significant role in balance, and any inflammation or pressure changes in the sinus cavities can affect the inner ear, leading to sensations of dizziness or vertigo. If you are experiencing dizziness that feels like the aftermath of a head injury, it is essential to seek medical attention. This sensation could indicate an underlying issue that requires further evaluation, such as vestibular dysfunction or other neurological concerns.

It is also worth noting that post-operative care is vital for recovery. Following your surgeon's recommendations regarding medication, nasal irrigation, and follow-up appointments can significantly impact your healing process. If you have not already done so, consider discussing your ongoing symptoms with your ENT specialist. They may recommend imaging studies, such as a CT scan, to assess the status of your sinuses and rule out any complications, such as retained secretions or new sinus infections.

In summary, while it is not uncommon to experience nasal congestion and dizziness after sinus surgery, persistent or worsening symptoms warrant further evaluation. It is essential to communicate openly with your healthcare provider about your symptoms, as they can help determine the best course of action to alleviate your concerns and improve your quality of life. Remember, your health and well-being are paramount, and seeking timely medical advice is always a prudent choice.
