Hello Dr.
Tsai: Why do I have a pimple inside my nostril that is also a bit painful?

betty, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2000/11/14

Dr. Cai Zhenggu reply Otolaryngology

Hello Betty: Based on your description, your condition seems to be folliculitis of the nasal vestibule.
Normally, there are nasal hairs distributed within the nostrils, and the base of these hairs is called the hair follicle.
Inflammation of the hair follicles can lead to the formation of small nodules inside the nostrils, resembling the pimples you described.
If you would like to learn more, you are welcome to come to our clinic for an examination.
My office hours are Tuesday and Friday afternoons, and Thursday evenings.
Thank you! ENT Specialist, Dr.
Tsai Cheng-ku.

More Info

The presence of a painful pimple inside your nostril can be concerning, and it is important to understand the potential causes and appropriate responses to this condition.
Firstly, the painful bump you are experiencing could be a result of several factors, including:
1. Folliculitis: This is an inflammation of the hair follicles, which can occur in the nasal passages as well. It is often caused by bacteria, particularly Staphylococcus aureus, and can lead to the formation of small, painful bumps.

2. Nasal Furuncle: A furuncle is a deeper infection of the hair follicle that can lead to a painful, swollen lump. This condition is also commonly caused by bacteria and can be quite painful. Furuncles can develop due to nasal picking or irritation.

3. Sebaceous Cyst: These are non-cancerous lumps that can form when the sebaceous glands become blocked. While they are usually painless, they can become inflamed or infected, leading to discomfort.

4. Allergic Reactions or Irritation: Sometimes, irritants such as allergens, chemicals, or even excessive nose blowing can cause localized inflammation and result in painful bumps.

5. Herpes Simplex Virus: In some cases, a painful blister inside the nostril could be a manifestation of a herpes simplex virus infection, commonly known as a cold sore. This is more likely if you have a history of cold sores around your mouth.

6. Other Infections: Conditions such as sinus infections or other viral infections can sometimes lead to painful bumps in the nasal area.

What to Do Next
If you are experiencing a painful pimple inside your nostril, here are some steps you can take:
- Avoid Picking or Squeezing: It is important not to pick at or squeeze the bump, as this can lead to further irritation or infection.

- Warm Compress: Applying a warm compress to the area can help reduce pain and promote drainage if it is a furuncle.

- Topical Antibiotics: If you suspect a bacterial infection, over-the-counter topical antibiotics may help. However, consult with a healthcare provider before using any medication.

- Pain Relief: Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help alleviate discomfort.

- Consult a Healthcare Provider: If the bump does not improve within a few days, becomes increasingly painful, or if you develop additional symptoms such as fever, swelling, or drainage, it is important to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can evaluate the bump and may prescribe antibiotics if an infection is present.

When to Seek Immediate Care
You should seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following:
- Severe pain or swelling
- Fever or chills
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Vision changes or swelling around the eyes
In summary, while a painful pimple inside your nostril can be due to various causes, it is often manageable with proper care. However, if symptoms persist or worsen, consulting a healthcare professional is crucial to ensure appropriate treatment and to rule out any serious conditions.
